SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Three different Golden Eagles scored, and senior Marco Brizuela netted his second game-winner in as many matches as the No. 17 John Brown University men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Mission (Mo.) on Friday night (Aug. 28) at Alumni Field.
Brizuela's sixth-minute strike put the Golden Eagles (2-0-0) on the board first, while sophomore Constantin Bauer scored in the 16th minute and senior Ransford Okyere added the final touch as the hosts out-shot the Patriots (0-2-0) by a comfortable 20-3 margin.
Brizuela, Bauer and Okyere each finished with three points, while Bauer and Okyere netted their first goals of the season.
Junior Juan Almanza (1-0-0) and freshman Parker Ross split time in goal, with Almanza making the lone save required in the first half, earning him his first win of the season. The JBU defense finished the two-match homestand with conceding just one goal in 180 minutes of action, allowing just 11 shot attempts.
Brizuela opened the scoring early, calmy potting a shot to the lower, left corner of goal after a beautiful passing play. Okyere began the play with a ball into the top of the box, where Bauer then laid off a pass to Brizuela to finish the attack.
Just 10 minutes later, Brizuela fed Bauer in the middle of the field at the top of the box. Bauer made one defender miss, cut to his left and let go a bending shot again to the bottom left corner to double the Blue and Gold lead.
John Brown took a 3-0 lead late in the match, with just under seven minutes left to play. Brizuela played a free kick to left flank, where Okyere carried possession into the box before unleashing a strike to the short, right side of goal to complete the scoring.
Senior Amaury Jarry and Brizuela each had goals wiped off the board due to a foul in the box and an offsides call, respectively.
Miles Cook made six saves on nine changes for Mission, while the hosts finished the evening with a 11-0 advantage in corner kick chances.
JBU now travels for a two-match road swing through Louisiana, where the Golden Eagles will take on Xavier (La.) on Friday night (Sept. 4) at Lafreniere Park in a 7 p.m. kickoff. John Brown will then face No. 12 LSU-Shreveport (La.) in a Labor Day contest Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. at The Swamp.
Friday' match at Xavier will be carried live on the Urban Edge Network, while Monday's contest will be streamed live to YouTube.
