SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Sophomore Abigail Stucker broke the John Brown University women's cross country individual 5K program record and helped the Golden Eagles lower the team mark for the second consecutive week Friday night (Sept. 11), as JBU finished fourth among 13 teams at the Missouri State Queen City After Dark at the Betty and Bobby Allison Sports Town.
Stucker crossed fifth overall in 17:44, eclipsing Allika Pearson's previous program standard of 17:46 set at the 2020 NAIA National Championships. The performance also cut 29 seconds from Stucker's previous 5K personal best of 18:13.
John Brown scored 135 points and posted a program-record team time of 1:36:00, taking 1:30 off the 1:37:30 mark the Golden Eagles established just eight days earlier at the Rogers State (Okla.) Distance After Dark. The Blue and Gold also finished 15 points ahead of No. 18 Kansas Wesleyan, which placed sixth with 150 points. Kansas Wesleyan entered the season ranked No. 18 in the NAIA coaches' poll.
Host Missouri State won the meet with 28 points and a team time of 1:29:13, placing all five scorers among the top eight.
A quartet of freshmen completed the Golden Eagles' scoring five behind Stucker. Allie Robertson finished 22nd in 19:02, Layla Maline took 36th in 19:31 and Emma Hunt crossed 42nd in 19:44, with all three scoring for the second straight meet. Vivian Sindelar moved into the scoring five in 48th with a 20:03 effort.
The Golden Eagles' first five finished 2:19 apart on the mostly flat 5K course, which featured a long opening straightaway with a gradual climb. The women's race began under the lights at 9:15 p.m.
"We're incredibly proud of both squads and the way they performed as a team," head coach Peter Cunningham said. "We've never looked this sharp this early in a season, and I would say we're not even clicking on all cylinders yet.
"It was really cool to see Abigail having so much fun with the night of competition. She was on a runner's high for more than 30 minutes after the race. Our ladies continue to be incredibly hard workers and amazing teammates for one another as they seek to worship Jesus while chasing fast times."
John Brown returns to action Saturday (Oct. 3) at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville.
