Burkett was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and a seven-year letterwinner in track and field at Christ Preparatory Academy, competing for the Patriots under head coaches Barney, Simoes, and Shleff. He played a pivotal role in his teams' dominance, contributing to multiple 2A team championships in both track and cross country throughout his high school career. In his senior year, Burkett set several program records, including the 1,600 meters (4:33), 3,200 meters (9:52), 2,000-meter steeplechase (6:21), and 1,600-meter relay (19:17). He also served as team captain and was named most valuable cross country runner.

Sam is the son of Dennis and Kendri Burkett and hopes to major in business administration.
