Lachance Nets Two, Golden Eagles Shutout Oklahoma Baptist

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- In just the first match after notching her first collegiate goal in a 3-1 victory over Science & Arts (Okla.), freshman midfielder Sara Lachance netted two goals in John Brown's 3-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist (6-5-0, 4-1-0 SAC) this afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Golden Eagles (8-3-0, 3-1-0 SAC) dominated play, more than doubling OBU's shot total (19-8), sending eight shots on goal towards J.J. Kosa, the Bison netminder. JBU held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks en route to the victory.

"I thought we put together a complete game today against a very good squad," said head coach Kathleen Paulsen. "I was really proud of the girls. I thought from the back line to the midfield, to the front line, it was a great collective effort."

Oklahoma Baptist entered the match receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, but it was the Golden Eagles that would score early and often in the first half.

In the 16th minute, JBU would jump on top, 1-0, when Sara Lachance ran an overlapping play over the middle past midfielder Laura Garcia. Garcia fed Lachance a nice pass pass on the right flank and the freshman midfielder sent a hard shot on goal that slipped through Kosa's hands for a 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, junior midfielder Casey O'Brien sent a beautiful pass up the middle to a streaking Braydi Frederick on the right side. After splitting a pair of OBU defenders, Frederick sent a shot cross-crease that landed in the left side of the net, handing John Brown a 2-0 lead.

John Brown capped off its three-goal, first-half outburst in the 28th minute as Lachance notched her second tally of the match off an errant throw-in by Rachel Harris. After a deflection of players in the middle jostling for position, Lachance controlled the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot past the Bison keeper that took an errant deflection off a defender.

The Golden Eagles out-shot OBU 10-6 in the first half and continued the dominating play into the second stanza, out-firing the guests 9-2.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Morency (8-3-0) knocked aside five Baptist shots on goal, collecting her eighth win of the season and her fourth shutout of 2013. Kosa (1-2-0) took the loss in net for the Bison, earning five saves in the losing effort.

Five JBU players finished the match with at least a shot on target as Garcia, Frederick and Lachance each finished with a pair while Savannah Beth and Casie Giffin each contributed one apiece.

The ladies will now enjoy a week off until they welcome Wayland Baptist (Texas) to Alumni Field on Saturday (Oct. 19) for an 11:00 a.m. tilt.
