CHICKASHA, Okla. -- Freshman Ryan Williams scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at one, but the John Brown men’s soccer team (7-5-1, 3-1-0 SAC) couldn’t contain Alex Breadman or Stephen Owusu as No. 21 Science & Arts (Okla.) tallied five unanswered goals in a 6-1 victory on Saturday (Oct. 10) evening at Drover Pitch.
The loss halted JBU’s five-match winning streak and also ended sophomore keeper Adam Holt’s career-high 450:44 consecutive shutout streak. The six goals allowed were the most JBU has given up since a 6-0 loss against the Drovers in Chickasha on Oct. 16, 2007.
It took only 44 seconds for the Drovers to end the Golden Eagle shutout streak when Owusu burned up the right flank and sent a pass to the top of the box, feeding Breadman for his fifth of the season.
In the 24th minute, in nearly identical fashion, Owusu fed Liam Madden this time for his seventh of the year, helping USAO regain the lead, 2-1. Owusu finished the contest with four primary helpers.
“Owusu was just better than us tonight,†said head coach Scott Marksberry. “Tonight was an illustration between knowing and executing. We knew exactly what we needed to do heading into the match. There were no surprises. But we did not execute the things we discussed and worked on at training this week and we did not deserve to get a result.â€
John Brown did score, however, breaking a six-match goalless drought against the Drovers. A foul just outside the box setup Williams for a free kick opportunity in the ninth minute. From 22 yards out, Williams bent a shot over the wall which dropped into the bottom right corner past USAO keeper Austen Parker, knotting the score at one apiece.
Finishing with a 21-9 advantage in shots, the Drovers came out in the second half and tallied four more after a 2-1 halftime lead.
Breadman finished his hat trick with two more goals while Brandon Kalou and Niall Burley each netted strikes for the final 6-1 score.
Holt finished the contest with two saves on eight chances and fell to 7-5-1 on the season before giving way to freshman Brit Wisener in the 82nd minute. Parker needed just two saves on three chances to bump his record to 7-1-0 on the season.
John Brown will regroup this week and take on Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 4:30 p.m. at Alumni Field, where JBU is a perfect 4-0-1 this year.
