CHICKASHA, Okla. -- The John Brown womens soccer team (6-6-1, 2-1-1 SAC) held a pair of leads, including a 2-1 advantage late in the second half, but Science & Arts (Okla.) managed to score two goals in the final 10 minutes of play to hand JBU its first conference loss of the season on Saturday (Oct. 10) afternoon at Drover Pitch.
Sophomore Samantha Webers individual effort handed the visitors a 1-0 lead and Robinson tallied her seventh of the season with under 20 minutes left to play after a slick play left her with an empty net. Both teams unleashed a flurry of shots with the Drovers finishing with a slight 20-19 edge.
“This was one of those games that when you look back on, you know was winnable,†admitted head coach Kathleen Paulsen. “We lacked some discipline in our defensive effort, and it cost us goals. Thankfully they are fixable, but we cant let down. We scored goals then relaxed and let our guard down. We cant do that.â€
With a 2-1 lead in hand, the Golden Eagles surrendered the game-tying goal in the 80th minute when Ryah Vyse netted her sixth goal in two games by blasting a shot from 22 yards out past JBU junior keeper Hannah Poor. The shot rang off the right post, bounced back and hit the left and trickled in.
Then, with 1:17 left to play in the match, Vyse struck again by sending a low cross from the left flank through the Golden Eagle box which found unmarked Jordan Cleveland alone at the goal line for the game-winning tap-in.
The loss is John Browns first in five contests.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles held the majority of possession throughout the match, which translated into a pair of one-goal leads.
“We can be dynamic in our attack and we can score goals,†Paulsen added. “That is exciting, but we need to put together complete games. We need to be dynamic in our attack while also being strong defensively. We can do way better than we did today.â€
Weber struck first for her third of the season in the 37th minute, accounting for the only goal in the first half. Freshman Jastin Redman switched fields from the left flank after a throw-in from senior Alex Fahr. Joining the attack, Weber secured the switch on the right side and jetted past a pair of Drover defenders into the box and let go a left-footed shot which rolled to the far left post past USAO keeper Caitlin Oliver for a 1-0 lead.
There was no scoring for nearly the next 30 minutes until USAOs Morgan Wilson tied the score at one. Wilson finished off a passing play up the middle from 12 yards out in the middle of the box.
Seemingly unphased, JBU retaliated eight minutes later when Robinsons savvy move in the box generated another one-goal advantage. Redman sent a perfectly-placed ball through the Drover back line to Robinson who chipped the ball past Oliver in the box on a one-on-one battle. Once past Oliver, Robinson recollected the ball and deposited it into the empty net.
Redman notched her team-leading eighth assist on the play.
Poor dropped to 6-5-1 on the year, making nine saves, while Oliver notched her first win of the year (1-0-0), also recording nine saves.
The loss pushes John Brown into a tie for fourth place in the Sooner Athletic table with five games remaining on the season. USAO (6-4-2, 4-0-0 SAC) remains unbeaten atop the standings.
With a week off, John Brown will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) when it welcomes Mid-America Christian (Okla.) to Alumni Field at 6:30 p.m.
