Women’s basketball uses fast break, trio of season highs to move to 3-1

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Three players scored season highs and the No. 12 John Brown University women's basketball team used 18 fast-break points to race out to a 22-8 lead after the first period and ultimately an 89-55 win over Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) on Tuesday night (Nov. 15) inside Bill George Arena.

Junior Baily Cameron, sophomore Jana Schammel and senior Luize Skrastina each posted season-bests, led by Cameron's 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor. Schammel added 19 points on five triples and 7-of-13 shooting while Skrastina finished perfect from the floor (5-of-5) and hit four from behind the arc to score 14 in the run-away victory.

The Golden Eagles (3-1) raced out to a 9-0 lead before the Pioneers (3-3) found the scoreboard.

A 13-of-30 mark from long range eventually propelled the hosts to a 40-point lead in the fourth quarter as CRC's offense failed to maintain pace with JBU. Eighteen fast-break points and 12 Pioneer turnovers culminated into John Brown winning three of four quarters by at least eight points each.

Skrastina finished one rebound away from the double-double, but helped the hosts to a 40-33 advantage on the boards and the Golden Eagles piled up five blocks, not helping the struggling visitors shooting efforts that resulted in a mere 33.8 percent from the field (22-of-65).

Kelcy Acklin was the lone Pioneer to score in double-digits as she finished the game with 21 points and nine boards. The remainder of the CRC squad scored just 34 total points.

The Golden Eagles shared the ball well, earning 29 assists on 37 field goals (78.4 percent).

JBU returns to action on Friday (Nov. 17) and welcomes Evangel to Bill George Arena for a rematch at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles won the previous tilt by an 80-56 mark in Springfield on Nov. 12.
