Volleyball continues streak with sweep in Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. -- Sophomore Carly McKinney posted a double-double and sophomore Jessica Meyer notched a match-best 13 kills, leading the John Brown University volleyball team to its ninth sweep of the season, this time staving off Southwestern Christian (Okla.) inside the Pickens-Springer Gymnasium on Tuesday evening (Sept. 19).

Meyer hit an outstanding .474 (13-4-19) and added five blocks in the win while McKinney's 11 kills and 10 digs paced the JBU (12-2, 4-0 Sooner Athletic) sweep. Sophomore Lindsey Davis also contributed an impressive hitting performance, finishing the evening at .444 (8-0-18) as the Golden Eagles attacked at a consistent .223 percentage rate.

"Southwestern Christian was ready and fired up to play us and played a different lineup that we had not seen on film or in person before last night," admitted head coach Ken Carver. "I was pleased with our team's effort, focus and ability to adjust our game plan given some of the lineup adjustments they made."

Hours after being named the NAIA's National Setter of the Week, senior Alyssa Arnold passed out 40 assists and recorded a double-double with 10 digs.

"Alyssa had another outstanding performance in running our up-tempo offense," Carver noted. "Our ability to be successful with our style of offense is predicated on solid serve-reception and our primary passers did a good job of initiating play with in-system passes.

"Our performance from the service line was another strong point in that we were able to serve at specific players in order to either take them out of their offensive set or slow them down considerably. Proud of our team in their ability to pick up another road and conference win."

Senior Beth Brankle bolstered the back line with 11 digs while serving one of JBU's six aces on the match.

Cashlyn Monroe led SCU's offense with 11 terminations while Courtney Traylor passed out 17 assists. Aliya Higginbotham dug up 13 of John Brown's attack attempts.

JBU turns right around to take on St. Gregory's (Okla.) in Shawnee tomorrow (Sept. 20) at 7 p.m. before playing four matches this weekend at the College of the Ozarks Invitational in Branson, Mo.
