PLAINVIEW, Texas -- Senior Jastin Redman blasted her sixth goal of the season late in the contest, helping the No. 7 John Brown University women's soccer team to rejoin the win column and grab a well-needed 1-0 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday (Oct. 12) afternoon.
In a wet and windy bout, the Golden Eagles (10-2-1, 2-1-1 Sooner Athletic) needed just one strike to end a two-match winless skid and it came in the form of a 76th minute marker from Redman, her third game-winner of the season.
In a relatively even contest that was leveled by weather, John Brown out-shot the Pioneers (8-4-1, 3-2-0) by a slim 11-9 margin. The hosts fired four shots on target, prompting sophomore Caitlyn Logan to make four saves to claim her eighth clean sheet of the season.
Kaitlyn Brantzeg made six saves on seven Golden Eagle attempts on goal, and even earned a little bit of help from her back line.
In the 12th minute, sophomore Sienna Nealon nearly pocketed her fourth goal of the season when she and the ball managed to escape Brantzeg at the top of the 18. With a wide open goal, Nealon feathered a kick toward an awning net, but a Pioneer defender cleared the ball off the goal line inches before it crossed the goal line.
Thankfully, in the 76th minute, junior Hannah Sweaney won a header off a goal kick and directed it towards the top of the Pioneer 18. Redman came swooping in, gained control of the ball and let go a shot to the bottom left corner from 10 yards. The strike allowed the Golden Eagles to remain unbeaten against Wayland Baptist in program history (14-0-3).
JBU will now make the long return home and rest before traveling to a pair of contests next week at Southwestern Christian (Okla.) and Central Christian (Kan.) on Tuesday and Saturday, respectively.
