SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Tameir Grosvenor netted the match's only goal in the fourth minute, and Texas Wesleyan claimed the 2018 Sooner Athletic women's soccer regular season title on Thursday (Oct. 25) night at Alumni Field with a 1-0 win over the No. 7 John Brown University women's soccer team.
The Golden Eagles (12-3-1, 4-1-1) had its three-match winning streak snapped, and the Rams (11-3-1, 6-1-1) claim its first-ever women's soccer title as members of the SAC.
Just four minutes in, Taylor Ross' pass on the counter-attack sprung Grosvenor up the left side. The TXWES forward worked around her defender and lofted her 21st of the season over sophomore Caitlyn Logan and to the far right side of the goal, stunning the hosts.
It was Wesleyan's only shot on goal in the contest.
Out-shooting the Rams 23-4 after that point, the Golden Eagles battled the elements and a staunch Wesleyan defense that featured nine players back after the tally.
JBU would come no closer than a 78th-minute chance. Junior Sarah Hughes poked at a loose ball in the box as the shot attempt squarely battered the left goal post and popped out as the Ram defense clumped up on the goal line and finally cleared the original Aspen Carpenter service from the corner flag.
In its four matches this season that have not ended in John Brown victories, the Golden Eagles average 21.0 shots per game but just 6.0 on frame and have scored just 0.47 goals over the 380 minutes of play.
Wesleyan's Christy Zwart was stellar in goal, making all four saves asked of her. Grosvenor and sophomore Sienna Nealon led all players with four shot attempts each.
John Brown still has an outside chance at claiming the No. 2 seed in next week's Sooner Athletic tournament, but will likely be forced to play with the No. 4 seed. JBU will close out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 27) at 3 p.m. by playing host to Southwestern A.G. (Texas).
