Volleyball Returns to Winning Ways, Williams Passes Milestone

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- After its winning streak inside Bill George Arena was snapped on Friday, the John Brown University volleyball team wasted no time, picking up a straight-sets win (25-14, 25-11, 25-12) over Science & Arts (Okla.) on Tuesday (Oct. 9) night to begin a new streak at its home venue.

Junior Elizabeth Williams passed out 17 assists to cross the 1,000-helper threshold on her career. Freshman Carrie Ciesla added another 19 assists, helping the Golden Eagles (10-8, 9-4 Sooner Athletic) hit .337 (46-13-98) on the match.

"I was pleased with our team's ability to come back from a disappointing loss and play a very efficient and focused match, by in large," head coach Ken Carver noted. "We wanted to limit the amount of unforced errors we made and the resulting free points we gave USAO.

"While the first several points for USAO came off of our errors, we were able to more quickly re-focus our efforts and get into playing the tempo and rhythm of volleyball we attempt to play every time we step on the court."

The John Brown balanced attack came from three primary attackers, while four Golden Eagles hit over the .400 mark.

Sophomore Taylor Glover rung up nine kills and junior Jessica Meyer added eight. Junior Kinzee Mayo contributed eight terminations on 13 swings (.538) and junior Lindsey Davis added an efficient four kills on seven attempts (.571).

"Elizabeth and Carrie did an excellent job in evenly distributing the offense tonight with each offensive playing group getting about the same number of swings during the course of the match," added Carver. "Lindsey, Kinzee and Taylor were all very effective. Congratulations to Elizabeth Williams for earning her 1,000 assists."

In the back row, freshman Jenna Lowery dug up a match-best 20 of USAO's 74 attempts and fielded all nine reception attempts sent her way. Freshman Elizabeth Parrish earned 11 scoops and went eight-of-eight in receiving.

Junior Megan Beck joined Davis with a pair of block-assists, helping the hosts to a 4-1 advantage in rejections.

Passionette Breedlove finished with seven kills and hit .462 (7-1-13) to lead the Drovers (4-18, 2-11) while no other Drover had more than a trio of terminations.

With just a 24 hour turnaround, the Golden Eagles welcome Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Wednesday (Oct. 10) night at 7 p.m. to complete its seven-match homestand before taking off to Columbia, Mo. to participate in the four-match Hampton Inn Classic over the weekend.
