HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Sierra Mitchell and the high-powered Mustang offense shot over 50 percent inside and behind the arc, forcing the John Brown University women's basketball team to suffer a lopsided setback in Morningside's (Iowa) 100-59 win over the Golden Eagles on Wednesday (Dec. 19) inside the Saint Francis School.
Senior Baily Cameron hit a personal milestone, however. By finishing the contest 9-of-16 from the floor - scoring a team-best 23 points, Cameron surpassed Holly Robason's program record of 670 career field goals, set back in 1991. Cameron now has 674 and entire semester ahead of her to build on that total.
The Mustangs (10-3) blew open an 8-8 tie at the 7:36 mark of the first quater and pieced together a 13-2 run to take a 21-10 lead. The Morningside offensive effort eventually ballooned into a 33-point quarter, the most points John Brown has allowed in any 10 minutes of play this season.
The run and quarter total mostly rested on the shoulders of Sierra Mitchell, who reached double-digit scoring in the first five minutes of play and went on to record a career-high 35 points. Converting 10-of-18 from beyond the arc, Mitchell tied a 2008 single-game program record.
In fact, the Mustangs shot better from three-point range than it did inside the arc, hitting 21-of-37 from downtown (57 percent), compared to a 54 percent (37-of-69) via the more conventional means of scoring. Only five points of Morningside's century-mark scoring came at the charity stripe.
In addition to Mitchell's 35, the Mustangs had contributions in the points column from Rodenburgh with 14, Sydney Hupp with 8 and Kailey Burke, Tayte Hansen and Carissa Powell with six apiece.
Senior Karina Chandra contributed 11 points in the loss on 4-of-6 shooting while freshman Marta Matamala added a career-best 10 points and five assists.
The Golden Eagles will return to Sooner Athletic play on Thursday (Jan. 3) when it welcomes Central Christian (Kan.) to Bill George Area for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
