ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- The John Brown University men's soccer team held an early lead for just under 12 minutes over No. 3 William Carey (Miss.), but the Crusaders rallied at netted four unanswered as the Golden Eagles fell in 4-1 fashion on Thursday (Aug. 6) afternoon at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
Senior Giovani Bejarano scored his second of the season, a top-shelf header off a corner from senior Santiago Vanegas, in the 9th minute, but John Brown (3-1-0) suffered its first setback of 2018.
Cavan Doherty scored a goal and an assists, including the tying strike just 11 minutes later when his header bested JBU keeper Britt Wisener. Doherty added his helper in the 53rd minute as he headed into the box a corner kick that found Michael Conejero at the back post, placing the match out of reach for John Brown.
WCU (5-0-0) remained unbeaten, mostly due to the play of Joaquin Ruiz Cabello, who torched JBU for a trio of assists, including the Crusaders' insurance goal in the 33rd minute as his service into the box was buried by Alvaro Adan Urrea.
Ben Whalley potted his first of the season in breakway fashion. Wisener made the first save, but Whalley deposited the rebound in the 40th minute, building William Carey's lead to three.
Wisener finished with a season-best eight saves as WCU out-shot the Golden Eagles 21-6 on the match, including 10-1 in the second half.
John Brown finishes off the weekend classic with a matchup against Kesier (Fla.) on Saturday (Aug. 8) at 4:30 p.m.
