Women’s Basketball Finishes Sixth, Dominates Paint at Central Christian

McPHERSON, Kan. -- Sophomore Taylor Fergen scored 11 of her career-high 16 points in the first half and the John Brown University women's basketball team held a 56-31 advantage in the pain in an 87-59 drubbing of Central Christian (Kan.) in the Golden Eagles' regular season finale on Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon inside the Ed Pyle Sports Complex.

While the contest began as a defensive struggle, the Golden Eagles (17-12, 13-9 Sooner Athletic) finished 50 percent from the floor in the first half, including 13-of-14 from the stripe to take a 43-34 lead into the intermission.

The shooting woes for Central Christian compounded in the second half. The hosts (3-26, 2-20) managed to hit just 1-of-15 behind the arc and finished the afternoon just 25 percent from the field and 16 percent from long range.

The third quarter provided the largest difference as JBU held the Tigers to just one field goal – with 42 seconds left in the period – finishing in a 19-6 advantage of the Golden Ealges.

Senior Karina Chandra led all players with 18 points, on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, and four rebounds. Fergen converted 7-of-8 from the stripe on her career afternoon and senior Baily Cameron turned in her seventh double-double of the season – scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the lopsided victory.

While eight points from freshman Kayla Nelson and seven from freshman Marta Matamala powered the JBU bench to 29 points, the Tigers could only produce eight from its reserves.

The Tigers were led by Piper Kalthoff with 14 points, and also got a solid outing from Kassidy Forsberg who finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Finishing the Sooner Athletic season in sixth place, the Golden Eagles will travel for the quarterfinals to third-seeded Science & Arts (Okla.) on Tuesday (Feb. 26). JBU split the season series with the Drovers, including a 69-48 win by John Brown inside the Drover Fieldhouse back on Jan. 10.
