BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- The John Brown University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Friday (April 26) in a sweep of Southwest (N.M.) before falling to No. 17 LSU - Alexandria in the semifinals of the SAC/RRAC Unaffiliated Group Regional Championships later in the day at The Club at Indian Springs.
In the quarterfinals, the Golden Eagles (1-13) was the recipient of two defaults against the Mustangs, handing JBU a 2-0 advantage to start the match. John Brown didn't let that go to waste, as the doubles teams quickly went to work.
Junior Julia McNeill and freshman Sydney Smith teamed up to improve to 4-10 on the season and quickly rang up an 8-2 win over Erika Mogollon and Holly Williams at the top flight. Freshmen Sabrina Paiz and Jadyn Engel grabbed their third win of the year with an 8-4 win over Daisy Sanchez and Gabi Ruiz at the second spot, moving JBU into position to earn its first win of the year needing just one singles win.
Engel did just that - and quickly. Engel sent Southwest home with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jackie Cervantes at four, vaulting the Golden Eagles into the semifinals. There waiting with a bye was No. 17 LSU - Alexandria.
Later on in the day, the Golden Eagles fell the Generals, 5-0, ending the season. Engel was named to the All-Tournament second team at the conclusion of the tournament.
