Golden Eagles Grounded by #5 Flying Queens

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- What started out as a promising two-possession lead midway through the first quarter fizzled quickly as the high-scoring No. 5 Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist (Texas) ran away with a 94-59 decision over the John Brown University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) inside Bill George Arena.

Seniors Sara Williams and Jordan Martin combined for 22 points on a combined 8-of-13 shooting effort, but the Flying Queens countered with a trio of 20-point outings from Jenna Cooper, Morgan Bennett and Kambrey Blakey as the visitors connected on 54 percent (37-of-69) of its chances.

Wayland topped 30 points in the first and third quarters while the Golden Eagles (9-18, 5-13 Sooner Athletic) played the nation's fifth-ranked squad to one-point quarters in the second and fourth.

WBU's Cooper scored 25 points while Bennett and Blakey netted 20 apiece to lead Wayland (26-2, 17-1). Bennett was 6-of-9 from 3-point range, Cooper 5-of-9 and Blakey 3-of-4 as Wayland converted 15-of-33 (46 percent) overall from long range. Kaylee Edgemon and Payton Brown added 11 points each, rounding out the five Flying Queens in double-digit scoring.

Bennett finished with a season-high 11 assists – one off her career-high – for her third double-double of the year. Cooper came up one rebound short of her ninth double-double.

Despite knocking down 11 triples, John Brown shot just 36 percent from the floor (21-of-58) while turning the ball over 15 times, combined to Wayland's six. Senior Ally Teague contributed nine points and six boards.
