COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Shorthanded, the No. 14 John Brown University women's soccer team battled No. 9 Columbia (Mo.) to a 4-1 loss on Monday (Sept. 18) afternoon at R. Marvin Owens Field.
A nightmare 125-second stretch beginning in the sixth minute quickly put the Golden Eagles (5-2-0) in a 3-0 hole as the host Cougars (5-1-0) scored on three consecutive shots, building an insurmountable lead.
Senior Emily Dobbins entered the match in relief of sophomore Regan Riley (5-2-0) and handed in a fantastic performance, turning away eight of nine Columbia shots on target in the second half.
Junior Elise Bosma ended Columbia and Natalie Allison's hopes at a shutout in the 87th minute. After her initial shot caught the crossbar and rebounded to the top right corner of the box, Bosma took a cross from sophomore Karen Flores and chipped in a one-touch shot that arced over Allison for her third goal of the season.
Flores picked up her first point of the year with the assist.
Despite senior Alyssa Henderson again hitting the crossbar before the final whistle, the Cougars out-shot JBU by a 15-7 margin, and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kick chances.
The Golden Eagles will return home before traveling to Bartlesville, Okla. later this weekend for a Friday (Sept. 22) night matchup with No. 6 Oklahoma Wesleyan at the OKWU Soccer Complex. Scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff, the match will be carried live on the KCAC Network.
