STILLWATER, Okla. -- The John Brown University women's cross country team competed in the 85th Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday (Sept. 23) morning at the Greiner Family Cross Country Course, and handed in a team time of 2:05:47 to capture 9th place (299 points) among the 19 team participating.
With the change now official at the NAIA level, the Golden Eagles participated in its first 6,000-meter race as a team.
For the second consecutive race, freshman Cera Eckenroth led John Brown runners. After her 17:54 finish in the three-mile meet to open the season, the Albuquerque, N.M. native handed in a 23:03 effort to finish in 32nd place. Freshman Esmerelda Sandoval also scored again for JBU, this time crossing the tape at 24:21.
Reigning SAC champion sophomore Hope Ahnfeldt's time of 24:53 was good enough for 88th place, while sophomores Emma Morton and Olivia Scates finished the scoring for the Golden Eagles with times just six seconds apart, 26:41 and 26:47, respectively.
Besides Eckenroth, Sandoval, Ahnfeldt and Morton have all scored in both races this season. The Golden Eagle 1-5 splite finished at 3:44.
The host Oklahoma State Cowgirls posted a near-perfect score on the day, taking the top four spots and five of the top six overall. OSU (1:44:39) edged runner-up Texas (1:50:29) to claim the title.
John Brown will rest for two weeks, then prepare for its next race on Oct. 7 morning in McPherson, Kan. The Golden Eagles will take part in the Carol Swenson Meet, hosted by McPherson (Kan.), at Bulldog Park. The mid-morning race is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
