Texas Takeover: Winter’s Hat Trick Fuels JBU’s 6–0 Blowout, Weekend Sweep

WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Senior Aubrey Winter netted her second-career hat trick and sophomore Tianna Jones posted back-to-back primary assists in another lopsided rout, this time with the No. 10 John Brown University women's soccer team racking up a 6-0 win over Nelson (Texas) on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors out-shot the Lions (7-4-2, 2-3-0 Sooner Athletic) by a 12-0 margin, finishing the week with a 34-1 shooting advantage over its opponents during its Texas two-step. Sophomore Marely Fonseca and the Golden Eagle (7-2-3, 4-0-1) defense combined for a 90-minute shotless clean sheet, the Blue and Gold's sixth of the season.

JBU's fourth consecutive win began in the 16th minute when sophomore Caitlin Hilson's long throw in was poorly cleared and landed right at the feet of Winter for a tap-in, netting the senior her second game-winner of the season.

While that concluded the scoring in the first half, John Brown erupted for five second half goals.

The lead doubled less than a minute into the second period of action as sophomore Tianna Jones' long service from the right wing found Winter at the back post for a 2-0 lead. Winter completed the natural hat trick less than four minutes later, when Jones again fed her at the back post, this time feet away from the right corner flag for Winter's sixth of the season.

With the floodgates now open, the Blue and Gold continued to pour it on. Junior Addie Craig finished the prettiest goal of the afternoon with a strike inside the box in full sprint for her fifth of the season in the 56th minute. Junior Julia Lambert played a ball through the Lion back line to Craig for the impressive finish.

Senior Lillian Johnson scored her second of the season 19 minutes later, completing a corner kick service from senior Olivia Fish. Fish's service found the head of junior Clare Barger at the back post, and Barger's header back into the mixer was skillfully finished by Johnson for the 5-0.

To complete the scoring, freshman Kara Whitson netted the final strike with just three seconds left, thanks to yet another well-weighted ball from freshman Andi Riley over the top of the back line. Whitson beat her defender to the ball, and tapped her first collegiate goal to the near post and past a helpless Delaney Murphy.

Winter led all players with five shots, with four on target and three beating the netminder. With Winter, Craig and Lambert finding the scoresheet, the Blue and Gold now boast four players – including sophomore Katherine Keys – that are averaging at least a point per match this season.

John Brown continues to stand atop the SAC table with a three-point cushion over Oklahoma City five matches into the nine-match league schedule.

JBU returns home to take on upstart Oklahoma Panhandle State, fresh off a last-minute draw with Science & Arts (Okla.), on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18). The SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network will carry the match live from Alumni Field.
