SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Junior Julia Lambert scored her 10th and 11th goals and added an assist, and sophomore keeper Marely Fonseca pitched her seventh shutout of the season as the No. 10 John Brown University women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 win over Southwestern Christian (Okla.) on Tuesday night (Oct. 21) at Alumni Field.
Sophomore Caitlin Hilson scored her first-career game-winning goal, and the Golden Eagle (9-2-3, 6-0-1 Sooner Athletic) defense frustrated the visiting side all match long, limiting the Eagles to two shots on target.
Now sporting a 31-2 goal differential in conference play, JBU improved its number from plus-25 to plus-29 with its sixth-consecutive four-goal outing.
Hilson began the scoring in the 12th minute when she finished a corner service from Lambert at the back post. Freshman Joy Long continued the service even further to the far right stick, allowing Hilson to net her third of the season.
While carrying the play the entire half into the direction of the setting sun, the Blue and Gold doubled its lead thanks to a penalty conversion from Lambert just 44 seconds before the intermission. It was her first career attempt and success from the spot.
Early in the second half, Fonseca booted a free kick from midfield dangerously into the mixer, and senior Aubrey Winter passed the ball ahead to Lambert for a turn-and-score just yards away from goal, extending the hosts' lead to three in the 57th minute.
The helper was Fonseca's second of her career – with the first coming last season at Southwestern Christian in Bethany, Okla.
Senior Olivia Fish completed the evening's scoring with her sixth of the year – continuing her career-best scoring effort – with just over a minute to play in the match. Freshman Ellie Porter's service from the right channel setup the goal as she notched her second point of the season.
Fonseca (9-1-2) made the two saves required of her, boosting her career total to 15 clean sheets. Lorelai Puglisi blocked aside seven of the 12 shots sent her direction, while the SCU back line cleared away Lambert's bid for goal moments after Hilson opened the scoring.
John Brown will now close its home slate of regular season matches Saturday evening (Oct. 25) by welcoming Mid-America Christian (Okla.) to Alumni Field. The 5 p.m. slated kick-off time will be carried live on both the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
