OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the first time in his career, John Brown University men's soccer midfielder Gabriel Cabrera was selected as the Sooner Athletic Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning (Oct. 4).
The native Costa Rican netted a second-half brace to lead the No. 25 Golden Eagles (8-2-1, 3-0-0 Sooner Athletic) to a 2-1 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4) at Alumni Field. In the midweek match against Central Christian (Kan.), he added an assist to finish the week with five points.
Cabrera attempted three shots over the two matches, and two of the three beat the Wayland goalkeeper. Currently with four goals and two assists (10 points), he sits third on the Blue and Gold in scoring.
Joining sophomore Alejandro Gallardo (Sept. 2), Cabera becomes the second Golden Eagle to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors and fifth JBU student-athlete to win a weekly award. Senior Adam Tebbs (Sept. 29) and sophomore Juan Almanza (Sept. 15, Sept. 22) have combined for three defensive weekly accolades.
John Brown returns to the pitch Thursday evening (Oct. 9) when the Blue and Gold face Texas Wesleyan at Martin Field. The 7:15 p.m. matchup will air live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
