LINDSBORG, Kan. -- A strong performance in doubles play set the tone for the John Brown University women's tennis team, as the Golden Eagles swept all three matchups before rolling to a 6-1 victory over Bethany (Kan.) on Friday afternoon (Feb. 28) at the Dr. Emory Lindquist Tennis Center.
John Brown (4-2) wasted no time jumping ahead, securing the doubles point with decisive wins at all three spots. Sophomores Ana Moreno and Annelise Dunn set the tone with a 6-2 victory at the third flight, while freshmen Ashley Miller and Arianny Sira controlled the top position with another 6-2 win. The Golden Eagles completed the sweep as seniors Erin Kuykendall and Ellie Swan held off Kyla Metro and Karee Adam in a tight 7-6 (7-4) battle at the second slot.
Momentum carried into singles play, where Sira delivered the clinching point at No. 3, rallying for a 1-6, 6-3, 16-14 victory over Metro in a dramatic third-set tiebreak. Kuykendall was the lone JBU singles loss, falling at the second spot in a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Maria Mistereck.
Elsewhere, Miller battled through two tight sets at the top flight, edging Ana Sofia Castillo Paz 7-5, 7-5. At No. 4, Swan cruised past Adam with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Moreno outlasted Helen Harbit 7-5, 6-3 at the fifth spot. Dunn closed out the win at the bottom flight, defeating Makenna Russom 6-4, 6-4, improving to 4-0 on the season.
"It was a great day of tennis for the ladies," head coach Mike Campbell said. "Ashley secured a big win at the No. 1 spot, while Arianny, who has only been on campus since January, earned a 16-14 victory in the tiebreak. The team played really well."
John Brown finishes its two-match Kansas trip on Saturday (March 1) when it takes on Ottawa at 10 a.m. inside the Dick Peters Memorial Sports Complex.
