OKLAHOMA CITY -- John Brown University finished second in the 2024-25 Sooner Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup standings with 79 points out of 103 possible (.7670), marking the Golden Eagles' second consecutive runner-up finish in the three-year history of the award.
Mid-America Christian repeated as champion, accumulating 85 of 98 possible points (.8673). Oklahoma City placed third with 101.5 points of 144 possible (.7049). The results positioned John Brown – alongside the Evangels and Stars – as one of only three institutions to earn at least a pair of top-three finishes since the cup's inception in 2022-23.
"I am so thankful to all of our coaches and student-athletes for making the 2024-25 year a tremendous success," said Robyn Daugherty, director of athletics. "It takes a significant time commitment from our student-athletes to compete at this level, and it's rewarding to see them recognized for the hard work and grit it takes to compete in the SAC. Our coaches pour so much time, energy and emotion into preparing our student-athletes for SAC play — from practice plans and game prep to travel, games, team meetings, small-group sessions, individual meetings, film study and scouting — and the list goes on. I am grateful for their tireless work and their commitment to representing JBU well."
John Brown competed in 10 of the conference's 16 sponsored sports, capturing two conference championships. The women's track and field team provided the Blue and Gold's signature achievement, claiming its first-ever SAC outdoor championship crown with a dramatic one-point victory, edging past Oklahoma City, 109-108. The women's soccer program shared the regular season title with Science & Arts and Mid-America Christian, earning the tournament's top seed based on goal differential for the Golden Eagles' eighth regular season crown in program history.
Both cross country programs also contributed strong performances, with the women's team achieving its highest-ever conference finish by placing second at the SAC Championships meet while the men's squad finished third among 11 teams. The men's soccer team added well to JBU's point total with a second-straight regular season runner-up finish.
These regular season titles and league championships anchored John Brown's point total. Women's outdoor track and field contributed 12 points, while women's soccer added nine. Men's cross country also earned nine points with its third-place finish, matching the point total from men's soccer. Men's basketball contributed 9.5 points and women's cross country added eight points with its runner-up finish.
The Evangels have claimed consecutive titles after Oklahoma City won the inaugural competition in 2023. Texas Wesleyan, which finished second in the first year, dropped to fourth in 2023-24 and sixth in 2024-25.
The Golden Eagles finished fifth in the inaugural 2022-23 competition with 58 points (.682), then surged to second place the following year with 70 points (.778).
The SAC Commissioner's Cup stands as a symbol of excellence in collegiate athletics, representing 16 championships. Member institutions earn points based on its performance in the regular season or championship event in each of the officially recognized conference sports over the academic year. Institutions accumulate points towards the Commissioner's Cup, with the highest finishing institution in a given sport collecting the maximum possible points, followed by the second highest finisher gaining the next highest possible point total, in descending order.
Points in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, men's and women's soccer, softball, and volleyball are awarded based upon the regular season standings. In men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's track and field, and men's and women's wrestling, scoring is determined by finish in the conference championship event.
