Golden Eagles Battle, Fall in Shutout to LSU Shreveport

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- In a grinding, chaotic match, the John Brown University men's soccer team threatened a few times but were unable to score in a 2-0 loss to No. 15 LSU Shreveport (La.) on Tuesday night (Sept. 16) at Alumni Field.

Although the host side was without a shot attempt in the first half, freshman Ransford Okyere checked in to begin the second half and had a wonderful scoring opportunity just 2:33 in the second half, but the shot went high.

Later in the half, sophomore Marcos Miranda had a brilliant opportunity in front of goal, but a horde of Pilots (2-0-5) were able to block the shot in a prime scoring position.

In what could have been the breakthrough moment in the 80th, junior Gabriel Cabrera missed just wide left as he broke in on goal unimpeded.

LSU Shreveport dispossessed the Golden Eagles in the midfield in the 86th minute and scored on the counterattack moments later, before tacking on an insurance marker with 32 seconds left in the match as the Blue and Gold pressed – hoping to find an equalizer.

Senior Adam Tebbs (2-2-1) made a trio of saves in the first half, including one at point-blank range when he robbed Jack Thomas just 92 seconds into the match from 7 yards away. Sondre Liahagen-Kolnes made one save in the second half, and continually made life hard on the Golden Eagles by clearing would-be corner kicks out of bounds.

Miranda and junior Jorge Cervantes each led John Brown with a pair of shots as JBU rebounded with a strong second half, out-shooting the visiting Pilots by a 9-7 margin.

The Golden Eagles will close the non-conference portion of the season Saturday afternoon (Sept. 20) when JBU takes on Columbia (Mo.) at R. Marvin Owens Field in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. The match will be carried live on the Urban Edge Network.
