Women's Basketball Falls to Langston Amid Major Second-Quarter Run

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- A game-defining second-quarter stretch swung for good as the John Brown University women's basketball team fell 76-52 against Langston (Okla.) on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) inside Bill George Arena.

John Brown (6-11, 4-7 Sooner Athletic) was led by sophomore Sarah Snodgrass, who finished with a team-high 20 points and eight rebounds, finishing 10-of-11 at the charity stripe. Sophomore Caelyn Ferguson followed with nine points, while junior Hannah McLain provided a spark off the bench with nine points of her own, knocking down all three of her attempts from behind the arc.

Freshman Tayla Trammell added six points and five rebounds, and junior Abbey Sanders chipped in five points, three assists, and three steals.

While both ties and lead changes occurred in a competitive first quarter and an early bucket pulled the hosts within one, 13-12, early in the second quarter, Langston seized momentum for good over the next seven-minute span. The visitors turned nine consecutive John Brown possessions into empty trips while building a 34-12 advantage – completing a 21-0 run to build a lead that would last for good.

Langston (16-2, 10-2) leaned on perimeter shooting and transition opportunities to build its margin. The Lions connected on 5-of-10 three-point attempts in the second quarter and forced turnovers that fueled the run, finishing the game with 33 points off 23 JBU turnovers.

The Blue and Gold showed improved execution after the break, scoring 14 points in the third quarter and 22 more in the fourth, shooting 58 percent from the field (7-of-12) and a perfect 100 percent from three-point range (3-of-3) in the final quarter.

The hosts finished shooting 35 percent from the field (17-of-49) and 33 percent from behind the arc (7-of-21), while converting 11-of-13 free throws (85 percent). The Lions, meanwhile, shot 45 percent overall (28-of-62) and 41 percent from long range (11-of-27).

Langston was led by Janiyah Tucker, who delivered a season-best performance with 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, while adding six rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Areyanna Hunter followed with 15 points and seven rebounds as 10 Lions found the scoresheet.

Finishing with advantages in the paint (44-36), on the glass (39-28), and in fast-break scoring (14-2), LU extended possessions with 15 offensive rebounds and converting the extra chances into 14 second-chance points.

JBU will now begin its second round of round robin league play, beginning in Pt. Lookout, Mo. when John Brown takes on College of the Ozarks inside Keeter Gymnasium Monday night (Jan. 19). Slated for a 6 p.m. start, the tilt will be carried live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
