Early 17-0 Run, Shooting Gap Separate MACU from Golden Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- After an early lead, the John Brown University women's basketball team fell 60-43 to Mid-America Christian on Thursday evening (Jan. 29) inside the Gaulke Activity Center as the Evangels completed the season sweep of JBU.

Sophomore Caelyn Ferguson led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, shooting 6-of-15 from the field while adding eight rebounds and three steals. Junior Abbey Sanders finished with eight points, knocking down two three-pointers, while freshman Oaklee Lofton contributed six points. Sophomore Sarah Snodgrass added nine points and nine rebounds, scoring seven of her points at the charity stripe.

John Brown (7-13, 5-9 Sooner Athletic) shot 21 percent from the field (13-of-61) and from three-point range (6-of-28), while Mid-America Christian finished the game shooting 42 percent (22-of-52) overall. The Evangels also held a 32-10 advantage in points in the paint, contributing to the final margin.

John Brown opened the game on a 7-0 run before Mid-America Christian closed the first quarter on a 17-0 stretch, as the hosts kept the Blue and Gold scoreless for 13 consecutive possessions.

While the visitors clawed back within striking distance in the second, MACU extended its lead in the third quarter as John Brown shot 17 percent (3-of-18) in the period, allowing the Evangels to maintain separation heading into the finale frame, 42-34.

The gap widened in the final 10 minutes as Mid-America Christian shot 69 percent from the field (9-of-13). John Brown was limited to two field goals in the period, finishing 2-of-13 from the floor while scoring five of its nine points at the free-throw line.

Mid-America Christian (16-4, 11-3 SAC) was led by Taliah Lee, who recorded 19 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks. Monique Carter added 11 points, going 4-of-4 at the free-throw line, while Sincere Roberts scored 10 points to give the Evangels three players in double figures.

The hosts finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field (22-of-52) but just 5-of-17 from behind the arc, matching the Blue and Gold at the free-throw line with both teams converting 11-of-13. Rebounding was even at 37-37, but the Evangels enjoyed a 12-3 scoring advantage from its reserves.

JBU finishes the two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 31) when the Golden Eagles look to avoid a season sweep when it takes on Science & Arts (Okla.) inside the Drover Fieldhouse at 2 p.m., live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
