Men's Basketball Rides Balanced Attack, 16-0 Finish Past Ottawa

Oetting scores 18 as Golden Eagles force 18 turnovers, collect 24 assists in 91-58 victory at Jack Kater Classic

WICHITA, Kan. -- Senior Trae Oetting scored a team-high 18 points, and the John Brown University men's basketball team combined efficient ball movement with defensive pressure before closing on a 16-0 run to dispatch Ottawa (Kan.), 91-58, Friday evening (Oct. 30) in the opening game of the Jack Kater Classic inside the Garvey Center.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) never trailed, distributed 24 assists against just eight turnovers and converted 18 Ottawa miscues into 28 points. John Brown connected on 11 three-pointers, received 42 points from its reserves and held the Braves (1-1) to just 23 second-half points en route to its second consecutive victory by at least 30 points.

"At this time of year, a lot of success can come down to effort, valuing the basketball and connectedness, and I thought we did all three at an extremely high level tonight," head coach Jason Beschta said. "We played with great energy and really worked to share the ball and create great shots on the other end. I also thought we showed a lot of depth, with so many guys able to come in and contribute in meaningful ways."

Oetting finished 7-of-18 from the field, knocking down a pair of triples while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. The senior scored nine points in each half, helping John Brown maintain its offensive production after intermission.

Sophomore Maliq Sosa provided a spark off the bench with 12 points in just 11 minutes, converting 6-of-8 attempts from the charity stripe. Sophomore Fred Rogers III added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting in only 11 minutes, while senior Marko Malekinusic matched his total with 11 points and seven boards, including three offensive rebounds.

Senior Jay Baxter rounded out five Golden Eagles in double figures with 10 points, five rebounds, three steals, three assists and two blocked shots. Junior Raziel Taylor dished out a team-high five assists, while freshman Samuel Hinsey contributed four helpers in eight minutes as 14 different Golden Eagles entered the scoring column.

Rogers opened the contest by collecting a steal and converting at the other end, and Malekinusic followed with a triple to give John Brown a 5-2 advantage. The Blue and Gold stretched its lead to 12-4 on a junior Patrick Odingo bucket with 16:14 remaining, but Ottawa gradually worked its way back into the contest.

The Braves trimmed the deficit to just two, 16-14, on a Jackson Harding second-chance basket at the 11:29 mark. Hinsey answered with a triple from long range, and Malekinusic followed with another three-pointer less than a minute later to restore an eight-point cushion, 22-14.

Ottawa responded with six unanswered points, including four free throws from Aries Hull, to pull within 22-20 with 8:15 remaining. The Golden Eagles countered with a decisive 13-4 run over the next three minutes, sparked by an Oetting triple and four points from Sosa. Baxter and sophomore Jack Ullom then connected on consecutive three-pointers to extend JBU's advantage to 35-24 with 5:11 left before halftime.

The teams traded baskets and trips to the stripe through the closing minutes of the period, with Baxter adding another triple and Ullom supplying a late bucket. A Seb Khan jumper with 26 seconds remaining sent the Braves into the locker room trailing 46-35.

John Brown connected on seven triples during the opening half, while limiting Ottawa to nine field goals on 27 attempts (33.3 percent). The Braves stayed within reach by converting 17-of-22 opportunities at the free-throw line, accounting for nearly half of their first-half scoring.

Ottawa briefly threatened after the break, cutting the deficit to seven on a Josiah Pattinson triple that made it 50-43 with 16:56 remaining. The Golden Eagles responded with another sustained offensive stretch, beginning with a Malekinusic free throw and an Oetting jumper before Taylor connected from downtown to restore a 13-point lead.

Sosa followed with a bucket and two free throws, and Baxter finished a second-chance opportunity to complete a 12-2 run that pushed John Brown ahead 62-45 with 11:44 remaining.

The Braves managed to trim the margin to 13 on a Jayve Price basket with 10:20 to play, but John Brown continued to answer. Oetting supplied six points over the next several minutes, including his second triple of the evening, and Rogers added consecutive baskets to help the Golden Eagles maintain control.

Price connected from long range to make it 75-58 with 5:21 remaining. Those would be Ottawa's final points.

Baxter and Malekinusic answered with consecutive buckets before Sosa added a basket and two free throws, stretching the lead to 83-58 with just under two minutes remaining. Odingo followed with a finish in the paint, and freshmen Adam Stanton and Judah Louderback knocked down consecutive triples in the final 71 seconds to complete the 16-0 closing surge.

Louderback's three-pointer with 36 seconds remaining gave the Golden Eagles their largest advantage of the night, 91-58, which stood as the final margin.

The Blue and Gold shot 47.4 percent (18-of-38) after halftime, improving upon its 42.1 percent first-half effort while limiting Ottawa to 28.6 percent (8-of-28) over the final 20 minutes. JBU finished at 44.7 percent (34-of-76) overall and 28.9 percent (11-of-38) from beyond the arc, compared to the Braves' 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the floor and just 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from downtown.

John Brown's advantage in ball security translated into a 28-4 disparity in points off turnovers, while its 14 steals more than doubled Ottawa's six. The Golden Eagles also outscored the Braves 30-18 in the paint, held a 24-15 advantage in second-chance points and narrowly won the rebounding battle, 45-44, including an 18-17 edge on the offensive glass.

Harding led Ottawa with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Price contributed 12 points off the bench. Aiden Olmestead added 11 points, with seven coming at the free-throw line, as the Braves managed just five assists against their 18 turnovers.

"It'll be a great test tomorrow with the quick turnaround against a tough Friends team," Beschta added. "I'm excited to see how we respond."

John Brown concludes its two-game stay at the Jack Kater Classic Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31) when the Golden Eagles face host Friends (Kan.) at 3 p.m. inside the Garvey Center in Wichita.
