SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- John Brown University freshman Katalina Chan and sophomore Sam Burkett have been named the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's and Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Tuesday morning (April 21).
Chan, a sprinter and hurdler from Overland Park, Kan., earned the honor for the second time this outdoor season following a three-event performance at the Little Rock Invitational on April 17-18. The freshman won the 400 meters in 57.08 seconds and finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.11, setting program records in both events. Her 400H mark also met the NAIA provisional qualifying standard.
Chan ran second leg as the Golden Eagles' 100-meter relay team landed a fourth-place finish of 50.26 as well.
Burkett, a distance runner from Olathe, Kan., claimed his first-career SAC weekly honor after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Little Rock Invitational in 9:21.56. The sophomore's winning time met the NAIA provisional qualifying standard in the event.
The Golden Eagles now turn its attention to the Sooner Athletic Championships, held at the Lions Athletic Complex in Waxahachie, Texas. The championships will run from April 23-25 and will be carried live on the Urban Edge Network.
