KANSAS CITY -- John Brown University's men's basketball program earned the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award for a seventh consecutive season, the organization announced Wednesday (July 15).
Head coach Jason Beschta has overseen the program throughout its seven-year run of Team Academic Excellence Awards.
The NABC Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes programs that completed the academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. A companion honor, the NABC Honors Court, recognizes individual junior, senior and graduate student-athletes who finished the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better.
This year, only one other Sooner Athletic Conference program, Science & Arts (Okla.), joined the Blue and Gold on the list.
"College basketball student-athletes do incredible things on the court, but their achievements in the classroom are equally worthy of celebration," said NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson. "Education is one of the NABC's core values, and the hundreds of programs and thousands of athletes represented on these awards reinforce the commitment to academic success that exists across all levels of our sport."
Three Golden Eagles earned both individual honors: juniors Evan Goldman and Trae Oetting and senior Klei Nagode were named to the NABC Honors Court and the NAIA Scholar-Athlete list, which recognizes student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or better. Senior Connor Kern, junior Marko Malekinusic and senior Josh Stewart joined them on the Honors Court, while sophomore Carter Carbonell and Jack Ullom also earned Scholar-Athlete recognition.
