SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- It didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to open the scoring, but the breakthroughs ended there, however, as the No. 7 John Brown University women's soccer team absorbed a difficult 2-1 setback to Benedictine (Kan.) on a blistering Thursday afternoon (Aug. 20) at Alumni Field.
Despite the Ravens (1-0-0) being held without a shot for the first 35 minutes of the contest, the visitors responded with a pair of second half goals in the come-from-behind decision.
Junior Katherine Keys opened the scoring 27 minutes into the match when she cleaned up her own penalty kick miss by tapping in the rebound to open the 2026 season scoring for the Blue and Gold (0-1-0).
The goal almost doubled the hosts' lead as junior Bella Mendieta nearly opened the scoring just nine minutes into the match, but her header drew the post and stayed in play.
After taking the first four shots of the afternoon, John Brown saw the visitors carry an 11-5 shooting advantage the rest of the way, including a 7-3 deficit in the second half alone.
Rowan Yows netted the equalizer for the Ravens just 31 seconds into the second half, potting a shot past freshman Ansley Fuchs.
Then with 12 minutes left in the match, Benedictine found its winner when Payton Vogelbacher sent the clinching attempt past Fuchs to complete the Raven comeback bid.
Fuchs suffered the defeat in goal in her first collegiate outing, making three saves, while Campbell Gregory also accumulated a trio of saves in the win for the visitors.
The Golden Eagles will now hit the road Monday night (Aug. 24) to face Evangel (Mo.) at Coryell Field. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on the Urban Edge Network.
