SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The No. 14 John Brown University women's soccer team generated 19 shots and put six on frame, but No. 21 Columbia (Mo.) goalkeeper Charlie Williams turned away each one as the Golden Eagles settled for a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 19) at Alumni Field.
John Brown (4-1-2) spent much of the opening half on the front foot, outshooting the Cougars 10-4 and testing Williams three times before the break.
Junior Holly Lanter created the first look just 29 seconds in, sending an attempt wide right closing in all alone with Williams before putting another on frame in the eighth minute. Junior Tianna Jones narrowly missed in the 12th, while sophomore Joy Long had a pair of chances later in the half, including an effort Williams collected in the 26th minute.
Sophomore Andi Riley put another attempt on target in the 29th as the hosts continued to push forward.
Columbia (5-1-3) managed just one shot on goal over the full 90 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Ansley Fuchs handled that opportunity in the 25th minute, denying Ella Bredensteiner to keep the match scoreless.
The Cougars emerged from halftime with greater urgency and produced their most dangerous spell of the afternoon.
The visitors earned three corner kicks between the 50th and 53rd minutes, and after a Rowyn Blanke attempt was blocked, Ava Lunders rattled the crossbar in the 53rd. Georgia Pardalos had another shot blocked less than a minute later, but Columbia could not turn the pressure into a breakthrough.
JBU soon wrestled the attacking initiative back. Senior Julia Lambert, making her first appearance since the season opener, tested Williams in the 67th minute before senior Addie Craig narrowly missed two minutes later. Craig threatened again in the 79th, putting a header on frame following a Long corner, but the Columbia keeper was there for another stop.
The Blue and Gold mounted one final push in the closing moments. Jones had an attempt blocked in the 89th minute, senior Brooklyn Hendricks saw another effort cut out by the visiting defense moments later and Jones put John Brown's final opportunity on frame with 15 seconds remaining before Williams collected her sixth save.
The Golden Eagles finished with a 19-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The two sides each earned six corner kicks.
Craig led the home side with five attempts, while Long added four and Jones finished with three. Williams made six saves for the Cougars, while Fuchs stopped the only shot she faced and received the draw decision, moving to 4-1-2 in goal and collecting her fourth career clean sheet in seven starts.
The Blue and Gold defense has not conceded a goal in the run of play in the last 279:21 of action.
The Golden Eagles will open Sooner Athletic Conference play next Saturday (Sept. 26), welcoming Texas Wesleyan to Alumni Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The contest will air live on the Urban Edge Network and the SAC Sports Network.
