OKLAHOMA CITY -- A clean sheet against No. 21 Columbia (Mo.), her fourth shutout of the season, earned John Brown University freshman goalkeeper Ansley Fuchs the Sooner Athletic Defensive Player of the Week award, presented by Digital Scoreboards, the league office announced Monday morning (Sept. 21).
Fuchs turned aside Columbia's only shot on goal, an impressive stop in the first half, as the No. 14 Golden Eagles played the Cougars to a 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon (Sept. 19) at Alumni Field. She went the full 90 minutes in goal while the JBU back line limited Columbia to seven shots overall.
The shutout lowered Fuchs' season goals-against average from 1.00 to 0.86 and raised her save percentage from .750 to .760. Through seven starts, Fuchs has allowed six goals across 630 minutes while making 19 saves and recording four clean sheets. John Brown is 4-1-2 with the freshman in goal.
The selection gives the Blue and Gold its second SAC women's soccer weekly award of the season. It is the first weekly honor of Fuchs' career, while sophomore Andi Riley previously earned Offensive Player of the Week honors Aug. 31.
JBU opens league play Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26), welcoming Texas Wesleyan to Alumni Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Urban Edge Network and the SAC Sports Network will carry the action live.
