Policies

Insurance Information »
The athletic injury insurance carried by John Brown University is a secondary insurance policy. If injured during practice or competition, the athlete’s primary insurance is billed initially. After the primary insurance has covered its portion, the claim is forwarded to John Brown University’s insurance carrier for processing. Unless the injury occurs as part of an emergency situation, all injuries must be reported to athletic training staff prior to seeking other treatment. Student-athletes seeking care for athletic injuries without prior approval of John Brown University’s athletic training staff will be held responsible for any expense incurred.

John Brown University cannot guarantee that providers’ recommended treatments are covered by insurance; therefore, it is the student-athlete / parents’ responsibility to ensure the medical provider obtains pre-authorization from their primary insurance prior to any medical procedure or purchase of medical equipment. Student-athletes / parents will be responsible for any expense not covered by insurance.

Athletic Physical Examination »
In order to participate in team or individual practices or competitions, all student-athletes must fill out a Medical History Questionnaire and pass a physical examination by a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO). Student-athletes must also have on file sickle cell trait status, concussion baseline testing and waiver of liability form. Student-athletes who have undergone surgery or who have had extenuating medical circumstances requiring further medical evaluation must present a release to return to full athletic activities from their treating physician before they will be allowed to participate in any team competition, practice, or training session.

Substance Abuse Policy »
John Brown University is a Christian university and is concerned with the total well-being of its students. All student-athletes of the university are expected to maintain high standards of moral conduct and concern for the well-being and rights of their fellow students. These standards of conduct include the prohibitive use, possession or distribution of alcohol, illegal drugs or tobacco products.
