Win Over Bethany Concludes Weekend Kansas Trip

LINDSBORG, Kan. -- Despite falling in doubles play, the John Brown University men's tennis team rebounded by sweeping doubles play in a 4-1 win over Bethany (Kan.) to end a 1-3 weekend on Saturday (March 5).

After setbacks to Bethel (Kan.) and McPherson (Kan.) by 6-1 and 4-0 scores on Friday (March 4), the Golden Eagles (6-4) responded by splitting matches at Kansas Wesleyan and Bethany.

Against the Coyotes, senior Woody Woodring's 5-3, 5-4 (6) win at the third flight tied the match at two apiece, but setbacks at the fourth and fifth flights clinched the contest for Kansas Wesleyan before junior Blake Cunningham completed a third-set tiebreak win at the six, 1-4, 4-1, 10-5. JBU just wasn't able to overcome losses at all three doubles matchups.

The Golden Eagles again lost the doubles point to Bethany, but a four consecutive wins at singles play clinched the match for the visitors. Sophomore Hudson Dick improved to 7-1 on the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zeke Mumford at the top flight after Cunningham's 6-2, 6-0 win at the bottom flight over Vukasin Dimic.

Senior Logan Wheeler continued the comeback bid with a 6-4, 6-2 win past Carlos Manel Rodriguez Rivas at the second flight, setting up Woodring's tiebreak victory at three. After winning 6-2 in the first set, a 6-3 loss in the second setup a tiebreak that Woodring claimed, 10-5. Woodring improved to 3-1 this season in third-set tiebreaks.

John Brown finally returns home on Wednesday (March 9) for its third matchup with Oklahoma Wesleyan this season. After sweeping the Eagles in Bartlesville last semester, the Golden Eagles will take on OKWU at the JBU Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
