OKLAHOMA CITY -- John Brown University men's soccer seniors Erick Diaz and Kyle Hix were named the Sooner Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their performances during JBU's perfect week from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, the conference office announced Monday morning (Oct. 7).
Both Diaz and Hix were instrumental in leading the Golden Eagles to two pivotal victories—a 2-1 win at Southwestern Christian (Okla.) and an impressive 3-1 victory versus Science & Arts (Okla.). The combined efforts helped John Brown not only notch back-to-back wins, but continue the team's program record of 10 consecutive unbeaten matches to open a season.
Diaz delivered stellar offensive performances over the two-match span. In the Golden Eagles' 2-1 win over Southwestern Christian on Tuesday, Diaz tallied one goal and one assist, contributing on each of the Golden Eagle scoring efforts. He followed that up with another goal and assist in JBU's 3-1 triumph over Science & Arts, totaling of two goals and two assists. His six total points earned him his second-career SAC Offensive Player of the Week recognition.
On the defensive side, goalkeeper Kyle Hix stepped in and improved to 3-0-3 on the season, backstopping JBU to its 3-1 victory over the Drovers. Hix made four crucial saves and held the USAO to just one goal, maintaining an impressive .800 save percentage over the match. He lowered his season goals-against average to 1.43 on the season en route to his second-career SAC Defensive Player of the Week award.
Both players won their first-career weekly honors, respectively, when the exact same tandem swept the accolades on Oct. 2 of last season.
The Golden Eagles now hit the road for a pair of matches over the next eight days, first taking on the SAC defending champions in Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Tuesday evening (Oct. 8) at Dill Field. A week later, John Brown makes its way to Kansas to take on Central Christian in a 5:30 p.m. start time. Both contests will air live on the SAC Sports Network.
