PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Highlighted by four new program records, the John Brown University men's and women's track and field teams posted several standout performances at the Pittsburg State (Kan.) NAIA / JuCo Challenge on Saturday (Jan. 25) inside the Robert W. Plaster Center.
On the track, senior Andrew Morton turned heads in the 60 meters, clocking a 6.91 to finish 14th overall and tie his own program record just set at the Arkansas Invitational. Sophomore Chase Stone finished with a time of 7.28 for 75th. On the women's side, junior Nikki Basye represented JBU in the 60 meters, running 9.28 for 78th place.
Morton also excelled in the 200 meters, earning 22nd place and a new program record with a time of 22.22. Stone crossed the line in 23.49, securing 66th and ninth on the program's all-time list. For the women, sophomore Emma Morton posted a time of 27.74 in the 200 meters to finish 52nd overall, a mark that now ranks third in program history. Morton returned in the 400 meters, finishing in 33rd with a time of 1:03.93 – good for seventh all time in program history.
In the 600 yards, freshman Hannah Foster and sophomore Hannah Hawk both earned spots in the Golden Eagles' top-10 rankings. Foster's time of 1:56.68 secured second place on the list, while Hawk's 2:07.99 placed her third.
Junior Matthew Cook headlined the men's 800 meters with a seventh-place finish in 1:54.90, claiming the top spot in program history and finishing just shy of an NAIA B-standard effort. He was followed by senior Drew Janzen, whose 11th-place finish (1:57.18) earned him seventh on the all-time list.
The 3,000 meters was another highlight for the Golden Eagles, with freshman Samuel Burkett finishing in 9:06.84 to secure seventh on the program's all-time list, while senior Josiah Petak's time of 9:09.84 earned him 10th. On the women's side, senior Emma Brown finished 14th in 11:26.11, while freshman Paige Andrews (11:26.81) placed 16th.
JBU was competitive in the mile as well. For the men, sophomore Joshua Freeman finished 33rd with a time of 4:49.95, with freshman Justin Akers (4:52.40) and sophomore Caleb Freeman (4:53.48) close behind. On the women's side, senior Anna Keys led the way with a sixth-place finish in 5:18.61, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Sophomore Emma Morton placed 22nd with a time of 5:44.95, while senior Emma Brown (5:53.27), freshman Paige Andrews (5:55.58), and freshman Tori Calder (5:59.62) also posted sub-six-minute finishes.
In the field events, freshman Ben Coker led John Brown with a 14th-place finish in the long jump, recording a mark of 6.39 meters (20-11.75). Coker also cleared 1.79 meters (5-10.5) in the high jump to place 23rd, while sophomore Nash Wessels finished 33rd after clearing 1.64 meters (5-4.5).
On the women's side, sophomore Clare Barger delivered the program's second-best performance ever in the high jump, clearing 1.47 meters (4-9.75) to finish seventh. Senior Grace Mitchell easily broke her own program record in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.05 meters (10-0), earning eighth place at the meet.
In the throws, senior Evie Scoles made history in the women's shot put, shattering the program record with a throw of 13.28 meters (43-6.75), good for third place overall. Scoles also competed in the weight throw, placing 25th with a mark of 11.30 meters (37-1).
The Golden Eagles return to action at the Herm Wilson Invitational which is slated for Jan. 31 through Feb. 1 inside the Heskett Center on the campus of Wichita State.
