SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Sophomore Olivia Tucker put away 10 kills at a .429 clip and the John Brown University volleyball team turned up the pressure from the service line Friday evening (Oct. 2), sweeping Central Christian (Kan.) in straight sets (25-10, 25-14, 25-21) inside Bill George Arena to close the first round of Sooner Athletic play.
John Brown (12-7, 8-3 Sooner Athletic) extended its winning streak to six matches while limiting Central Christian to a -.020 attacking percentage (19-21-102) and finished with advantages in kills (33-19), aces (12-4) and blocks (6-3). The six-match streak dates back to a Sept. 19 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Tucker committed only one error on 21 swings to lead the Golden Eagle offense, while sophomore Clara Hyke followed with seven kills. Senior Akayla Kador added six terminations at a .286 clip and was also JBU's most productive presence at the net, finishing with one solo rejection and four block-assists.
The Blue and Gold produced its biggest separation from behind the service line. Sophomore Paige Addington landed a match-high five aces, junior Tessa Medina added three and senior Mia Bowman supplied two as five different Golden Eagles recorded at least one service winner.
It was the sixth time this season that John Brown had served up 10 or more aces. The Golden Eagles also improved to 6-3 on the year in straight-sets matches.
Addington also anchored the back row with a match-high 18 digs, while sophomore Taylor Kosmicki paired 11 assists with 10 scoops for a double-double. Medina handed out a team-best 17 assists as John Brown again utilized multiple setters and lineup combinations throughout the evening.
Fourteen Golden Eagles saw action as head coach Ken Carver worked through different substitution patterns, and junior Federica Ferrari continued providing production when called upon with four kills and two block-assists.
"Another good win and a great way for our team to close out the first round of league play," Carver said. "I was proud of our players for handling the different lineup combinations and substitution patterns we used throughout the match. We were much more effective from the service line tonight, and our back-row players did another excellent job giving our setters quality opportunities to run the offense."
Central Christian (0-16, 0-11 SAC) received six kills on .286 hitting from Chloe Goratowski, while Lexi Witt totaled 16 assists, 17 digs and three aces for a double-double. Libero Nattelynn Burns added nine digs for the Tigers.
Set 1: After Central Christian answered Medina's opening ace to draw even at 1-1, John Brown immediately created separation with four consecutive points. Tucker supplied a termination and Bowman followed with an ace during the surge, helping the hosts race ahead 5-1.
The margin continued growing behind Addington's first service turn. Tucker sided out at 6-2 before a Tiger attacking error, an Addington ace and a Kador termination completed a five-point push that forced Central Christian into a timeout with JBU leading 10-2.
John Brown later led 17-5 before the visitors put together their best response of the opener with three straight points. The Golden Eagles answered immediately, however, capitalizing on four consecutive Central Christian attacking errors to stretch the advantage to 21-8.
Tucker provided three of JBU's final five points, including the set-ending termination, as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 25-10 victory.
John Brown hit a match-best .257 (11-2-35), landed five aces and held the Tigers to -.167 hitting (3-9-36).
Set 2: John Brown again took command almost immediately after the teams split the first two rallies. Hyke supplied two kills and Addington dropped consecutive aces during a five-point Golden Eagle run that opened a 6-1 advantage.
The Tigers briefly sided out, but another six consecutive JBU points followed. Tucker started the run with a termination before three Central Christian attacking errors surrounded Kosmicki's ace, pushing the hosts in front 12-2.
Kador helped keep the set firmly in John Brown's control with four kills in the frame, and Medina later added another ace as JBU stretched its lead to 18-6. Central Christian found more offense late, but never threatened the margin before Kador closed the 25-14 decision with her sixth termination of the match.
The Tigers finished the second frame at -.056 (6-8-36), marking a second consecutive set with more attacking errors than kills.
Set 3: Central Christian produced its most competitive effort in the third and briefly took its first lead of the night at 2-1, but John Brown responded with three straight points as Kador teamed on consecutive rejections to move the hosts back ahead 4-2.
JBU gradually built the margin from there, using an Addington ace to make it 6-3 before Bowman later landed another service winner during a four-point push that opened a 12-5 advantage. The Golden Eagles still led 19-13 when Central Christian began its strongest sustained charge of the match.
The Tigers trimmed the margin to 19-15 and, after John Brown answered with three straight points behind kills from freshman Chelsea Day, Kador and Ferrari, Central Christian rattled off four consecutive rallies of its own. Witt landed two aces during the response, narrowing JBU's advantage from 22-15 to 22-19 and prompting the hosts to execute under pressure down the stretch.
Ferrari sided out with her fourth kill of the evening, and after the teams traded the next three rallies, Hyke moved JBU to match point before Tucker delivered the final termination for a 25-21 victory.
"I was also pleased with our defensive discipline," Carver added. "We were ready to block when Central Christian was in system and did a good job adjusting to out-of-system attacks from different areas of the court. Overall, I felt we consistently executed in all phases of the game and performed at the level we expect of ourselves each match."
With the first trip through the Sooner Athletic schedule complete, John Brown begins the second half of league play Tuesday evening (Oct. 6), traveling to Point Lookout, Mo., for a 6 p.m. rematch with College of the Ozarks (Mo.) inside Keeter Gymnasium.
The Golden Eagles took the first meeting with the Bobcats, a five-match heavyweight tilt that broke a three-match skid to CofO. JBU improved to 16-7 at home against Ozarks since the 1993 season.
