Craig Equalizer Earns No. 19 Women’s Soccer Point at Panhandle State

Golden Eagles move within one point of fourth straight SAC regular-season title after 1-1 draw

GOODWELL, Okla. -- Senior Addie Craig erased an early deficit with a second-half equalizer as the No. 19 John Brown University women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Anchor D Stadium.

John Brown trailed from the 8th minute until Craig pulled the visitors level shortly after halftime. The Golden Eagles held OPSU without a shot over the final 45 minutes and generated four second-half corner kicks, but could not produce the go-ahead goal despite controlling the remainder of the match.

The draw moved John Brown (11-1-3, 7-0-1 Sooner Athletic) to 22 points atop the league table, five ahead of Oklahoma City and six clear of Science & Arts. With one regular-season match remaining, JBU needs just one more point to secure at least a share of its fourth consecutive Sooner Athletic regular-season championship and 10th overall.

Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-8-3, 1-5-2) stunned the Golden Eagles in the 8th minute when Emma Contreras finished a setup from Celine Loraine to put the hosts in front.

John Brown responded with pressure but struggled to turn possession into dangerous looks on frame. Junior Tianna Jones forced Leylani Bernal into a save in the opening two minutes and later sent two more attempts wide, while senior Julia Lambert and junior Holly Lanter also generated first-half chances.

At the other end, freshman goalkeeper Ansley Fuchs kept the deficit at one with four saves before halftime. She denied Contreras in the 21st and 38th minutes, turned aside Loraine in the 29th and stopped Emily Chavez in the 40th.

The Blue and Gold needed less than three minutes after the interval to finally draw level.

Junior Caitlin Hilson supplied the assist for Craig, who converted her ninth goal of the season in the 48th minute to make it 1-1.

From there, the hosts failed to record another shot.

JBU continued pressing for the winner, with junior Katherine Keys forcing Bernal into a save in the 61st minute before Hilson headed wide in the 71st. The Golden Eagles generated three more corners over the final 20 minutes, but headers from Keys and junior Bella Mendieta both missed the target as the Aggies held on for the point.

John Brown finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots and generated five corners to Panhandle State's two. All five Aggie attempts came before halftime, while JBU owned a 6-0 shot advantage after the break.

Fuchs (11-1-3) finished with four saves, all in the opening half, while Bernal made three stops for the hosts.

The result extended John Brown's unbeaten streak to 14 matches while ending a seven-match winning streak. The Golden Eagles also moved to 8-0-1 all-time against the Aggies.

The regular-season title race now comes home to Alumni Field. John Brown hosts Oklahoma City on Tuesday (Oct. 27) at 5 p.m., needing one point to guarantee at least a share of the conference crown. The decisive finale will be available live on the Urban Edge Network and SAC Sports Network.
