Golden Eagles Surrender Two-Set Lead in Goodwell

Blue and Gold lead 21-18 in fourth before Aggies force fifth and complete reverse sweep

GOODWELL, Okla. -- The John Brown University volleyball team claimed the opening two sets Friday evening (Oct. 23), but Oklahoma Panhandle State answered with three straight, including a decisive 15-5 fifth frame, to reverse sweep the Golden Eagles (25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 5-15) inside Anchor D Arena.

John Brown fell to 14-11 overall and 10-7 in Sooner Athletic play, remaining seventh in the conference standings, while Oklahoma Panhandle State improved to 6-14 and 6-10 in league action.

The result also marked the Aggies' second consecutive victory over JBU in Goodwell.

The Golden Eagles actually finished with advantages in both kills and attacking percentage, putting away 55 kills to OPSU's 53 and hitting .148 (55-28-182) compared with the hosts' .136 (53-29-176). The separation came primarily from the service line, where the Aggies landed 14 aces against seven for JBU. The teams were separated by one dig, 87-86 in favor of OPSU, and finished even with five total blocks apiece.

Sophomore Kate Carlson led John Brown with 14 kills on .204 hitting and added two block assists, while freshman Chelsea Day supplied 13 terminations at a team-best .276 clip. Sophomore Olivia Tucker and junior Federica Ferrari each finished with eight kills, and sophomore Reese Montgomery added five kills on .222 hitting with three block assists.

Junior Tessa Medina recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 16 digs, while sophomore Taylor Kosmicki added 18 helpers and nine digs. Sophomore Paige Addington paced the Golden Eagle defense with a match-high 28 digs and added two aces, while junior Mallory Jury landed a team-best three aces.

Oklahoma Panhandle State received a triple-double from Veronica Rolando, who finished with 14 kills on .353 hitting, 21 assists and 10 digs while adding three aces. Tanner Robinson paired a match-high 15 kills with 18 digs and four aces for a double-double, while Maria Augustyniak added 18 assists and 11 digs. Kylie Cumbie led the Aggies with 25 digs and chipped in two aces.

Set 1: John Brown established control quickly after a 3-3 tie. Montgomery and Tucker combined on a block to start a five-point run, Addington followed with an ace and Day eventually capped the surge with a kill to give the Golden Eagles an 8-3 advantage.

The margin continued growing from there. Ferrari's kill followed by consecutive Jury aces pushed JBU ahead 13-5, and the Blue and Gold later stretched the advantage to eight at 16-8.

OPSU never drew closer than six through the remainder of the frame. Carlson supplied three kills down the stretch, including the final termination, as John Brown closed a 25-17 opener. The Golden Eagles hit .237 (12-3-38) while holding the Aggies to negative-.054 (7-9-37).

Set 2: The second developed into the most back-and-forth frame of the match, featuring 10 ties and four lead changes. Neither side created much early separation until Oklahoma Panhandle State turned a 10-10 tie into a 14-10 advantage.

JBU responded immediately. Day supplied two kills around an Addington ace to pull the Golden Eagles even at 14, and John Brown later erased another three-point deficit when an OPSU service error and consecutive attacking errors tied the set at 18-18.

The Aggies still held a 22-21 edge late, but the Golden Eagles produced the decisive finish. Carlson tied the set at 22, Montgomery followed with a kill, and Montgomery then combined with Tucker on a block before an OPSU attacking error completed a four-point closing run and 25-22 JBU victory.

John Brown hit a match-best .276 (13-5-29) in the second while OPSU countered at .219 (13-6-32), sending the Golden Eagles into the intermission with a two-set advantage.

Set 3: JBU appeared ready to continue the momentum when consecutive Tucker kills helped build an early 3-0 advantage, and two OPSU attacking errors later stretched the margin to 7-3.

The Aggies answered with four straight points to draw even at 7-7, however, and the set remained tight through ties at 9-9, 14-14 and 16-16. Oklahoma Panhandle State repeatedly found the next sideout from there, gradually pushing its advantage to 20-17 and then 23-19.

John Brown twice trimmed the margin late, with Ferrari pulling the Golden Eagles within 24-21, but Rolando terminated the ensuing rally to finish the 25-21 set.

OPSU put away 16 kills in the third and hit .174 (16-8-46), while JBU managed 12 kills at .154 (12-6-39). The Aggies also landed three aces in the frame.

Set 4: The fourth matched the second for volatility, featuring 10 ties and four lead changes before Oklahoma Panhandle State seized the final swing. Senior Akayla Kador and Ferrari helped turn a 4-4 tie into a 9-4 advantage, but OPSU methodically erased the margin and pulled even at 11-11.

The teams traded sideouts through 14-14 before JBU produced another push. Kador and Day supplied kills around an OPSU attacking error and a Kador-Day block, giving the Golden Eagles an 18-14 cushion. Jury later landed an ace to make it 21-18, putting John Brown four points from closing the match.

Oklahoma Panhandle State responded with the run that changed the night. Robinson sided out before Giulia Beatriz Silva delivered consecutive aces, Rolando followed with a kill and a JBU attacking error completed a five-point surge that suddenly put the Aggies ahead 23-21.

John Brown recovered to tie the frame at 23-23 behind an OPSU attacking error and Carlson kill, but Robinson answered for set point before Marielle Gonzalez finished the 25-23 decision, forcing a fifth.

The fourth also underscored OPSU's pressure from the service line. Five of the Aggies' 14 aces came in the frame, helping overcome JBU's 15-10 advantage in kills.

Set 5: John Brown briefly moved in front 2-1 on Carlson's kill, but the deciding frame quickly turned. Oklahoma Panhandle State scored five consecutive points to build a 6-2 lead, then stretched the margin to 10-4 as JBU struggled to regain its attacking rhythm.

Kador and Carlson combined on a block to make it 10-5, but that proved to be the Golden Eagles' final point. OPSU scored the last five rallies, with Robinson contributing a kill and the match-ending ace in the closing stretch to complete the reverse sweep.

John Brown managed three kills against six attacking errors on 26 swings in the fifth, finishing at negative-.115, while the Aggies hit .250 (7-2-20).

The Golden Eagles turn around Saturday afternoon (Oct. 24) for a 1 p.m. first serve against Wayland Baptist (Texas) inside the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas, where live coverage will be available on the Urban Edge Network.
