KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After rewriting the John Brown University record book with the fastest 5K in women's program history, sophomore Abigail Stucker was named the NAIA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 16), marking the first national weekly award in program history.
Stucker, a Fort Worth, Texas native, placed fifth in a field of 138 runners at Missouri State's Queen City After Dark on Friday evening (Sept. 11), finishing the 5K in 17:44. Her time lowered the previous JBU standard by two seconds, surpassing the 17:46 set in 2020 by four-time All-American Allika Pearson '22.
"We're incredibly proud of Abigail," admitted head coach Peter Cunningham. "What a cool benchmark for her and our program. She's working hard and representing our team so well.
"Her dedication to the sport and the way her teammates motivate and support her are worth drawing attention to. We'll celebrate this and then get back to work."
Stucker also paced the Golden Eagles to a 1:36:00 team time, another program record. JBU had established the previous mark of 1:37:30 at its previous meet, making Friday the second consecutive race in which the Blue and Gold improved the program's 5K team time record.
The performance also earned Stucker Sooner Athletic Women's Runner of the Week honors, the first conference weekly award of her career. Her national selection is the first by an SAC women's runner since Oklahoma City's Lydia Mato earned the honor on Oct. 24, 2018.
Friday's effort continued a rapid 5K progression for Stucker, who has lowered her time by 44 seconds across her three career 5K races. She ran 18:28 at the Rogers State Distance After Dark in 2025 before returning to the same race this season and finishing in 18:13, a 15-second year-over-year improvement. Eight days later, Stucker cut another 29 seconds with her record-setting performance in Springfield.
Stucker and the Golden Eagles return to action Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark. The women's race is scheduled for 12:10 p.m.
