BETHANY, Okla. -- Senior Julia Lambert headed home a pair of goals and the No. 14 John Brown University women's soccer team offense erupted in a 5-0 victory over Southwestern Christian (Okla.) on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 29) at Cagle Family Field.
JBU's five goals came from four different scorers, while seven assists were credited across the attack. Lambert converted both of her attempts, sophomore Joy Long supplied two assists, and sophomore Kayah Robbins finished with a goal and an assist.
Junior Katherine Keys and junior Tianna Jones each generated four shots to lead the Golden Eagles.
John Brown (6-1-2, 2-0-0 SAC) spent much of the opening half pressing without reward before Lambert finally broke through in the 39th minute. From there, the Blue and Gold scored five times over the final 51:13, finished with a 20-4 advantage in shots and placed 13 attempts on frame while allowing just one.
The breakthrough developed down the left flank, where senior Ellie Porter pushed the ball forward before Jones delivered a 25-yard cross toward the back post. Lambert arrived on the end of the service and headed it home at 38:47 for her first goal of the season.
JBU doubled the margin less than six minutes later from a sequence that began with a corner from the right flag. After the initial service was sent back into the box, Robbins kept the play alive near the far-left post with a bicycle kick back toward the middle. Junior Caitlin Hilson headed the ball on, and freshman Sophia Alvarado collected it before finishing from six yards at 44:32 for her first collegiate goal.
The Golden Eagles carried the 2-0 advantage into the break after outshooting Southwestern Christian 10-2 and generating six corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
John Brown wasted little time adding to the lead after halftime. Jones began the third scoring move with a back-heel flick that sprung junior Holly Lanter up the right flank before midfield. Lanter carried the ball all the way to the edge of the SCU penalty area before being dispossessed, but Long collected the loose ball, raced into the box and fired a low service across the goalmouth. Senior Addie Craig was waiting unmarked in front of goal and redirected it home in the 50th minute for her third of the season.
Lambert then struck again in the 72nd minute. Long beat a defender on the right side before sending a 25-yard cross into the area, where Lambert found space in front of goal and headed the service to the back of goal for her second of the afternoon to push the advantage to 4-0.
The Blue and Gold continued attacking through the final whistle, and Robbins supplied the fifth with 50 seconds remaining. A broken play inside the penalty area sent a loose ball caroming toward the middle, where Robbins slid onto it and finished first-time from roughly 10 yards for her second goal of the campaign.
SCU (6-2-1, 0-2-0) goalkeeper Lorelai Puglisi made eight saves in the loss.
At the other end, freshman Ansley Fuchs (6-1-2) needed just one save to secure her sixth clean sheet of the season, while extending her shutout streak to 180 minutes to open league play. She denied Alexandrea Villalobos in the 36th minute, and the JBU defense kept each of Southwestern Christian's three remaining attempts off target.
