OKLAHOMA CITY -- After leading John Brown University through a 3-0 conference week and surpassing 20 assists in all three victories, junior Tessa Medina was named the Sooner Athletic Setter of the Week, presented by Digital Scoreboards, the league office announced Monday morning (Sept. 28).
Medina racked up 76 assists across 14 sets – the best three-match stretch of her career, averaging 5.43 per set, while adding seven service aces and 23 digs. She led the Golden Eagles offense in each contest as the Golden Eagles defeated College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in five sets, Mid-America Christian (Okla.) in four and Science & Arts (Okla.) in five, moving to 10-7 overall and 6-3 in SAC play.
The week was bookended by successive season highs. Medina handed out 27 helpers with three aces and nine digs in Tuesday's five-set victory over College of the Ozarks, then followed a 21-assist, three-ace outing at Mid-America Christian by resetting the mark with 28 assists and eight digs in Saturday's five-set road win at Science & Arts.
"I'm extremely happy for and proud of Tessa for earning Setter of the Week honors," head coach Ken Carver said. "She's gotten off to the strongest start of her career and has done a great job helping put our younger players in position to succeed offensively.
"Her aggressiveness and effectiveness from the service line have also made her one of the conference's top serving players. It's great to see her hard work and consistency so far this season rewarded with this honor."
The honor is the first Setter of the Week award of Medina's career and makes her the third Golden Eagle to earn SAC weekly recognition this season. Mia Bowman collected Defender of the Week honors Aug. 24, while Paige Addington earned the same award Sept. 7 and Sept. 14, bringing the Blue and Gold's season total to four weekly league awards.
John Brown returns to Bill George Arena Thursday evening (Oct. 1), opening a two-match homecoming weekend against Langston (Okla.) at 6 p.m. Urban Edge Network and the SAC Sports Network will carry the action live.
