SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Four Golden Eagle attackers reached double-figure kills for the first time this season Tuesday night (Sept. 22), and the John Brown University volleyball team answered a fourth-frame setback with a fast start in the fifth to outlast College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in five sets (21-25, 25-15, 26-24, 21-25, 15-10) inside Bill George Arena.

John Brown (8-7, 4-3 Sooner Athletic) generated 63 kills and 60 assists while finishing near its season attacking average at .164 (63-33-183). The Golden Eagles held College of the Ozarks to a .119 clip (48-27-176) and also finished with an 85-78 advantage in digs, while the visitors countered with advantages in aces (11-9) and blocks (12-4).

The balance was unprecedented this season for the Blue and Gold as sophomore Clara Hyke led the way with 15 terminations, freshman Chelsea Day added 14, sophomore Olivia Tucker finished with 13 and sophomore Kate Carlson chipped in 10.

The quartet accounted for 52 of JBU's 63 kills, with Tucker producing the most efficient line of the attackers at .323 (13-3-31).

Junior Tessa Medina largely directed the attack with 27 assists, freshman Chloe Hooper handed out 18 and sophomore Taylor Kosmicki added four. Medina contributed three service aces and nine digs, while Hooper added 11 scoops from the back row to complete her first-career double-double.

Sophomore Paige Addington anchored the back-row effort with 20 digs and again made an impact from the service line with a match-high four aces. Senior Mia Bowman finished with 15 digs, while freshman Emily Whitten supplied 10 as the Golden Eagles were forced to defend a College of the Ozarks attack that mixed off-speed shots with harder-driven swings throughout the evening.

Serving played a central role in the Blue and Gold gameplan. The Golden Eagles looked to apply enough pressure to keep Ozarks from consistently featuring its middle attack, instead pushing more of the visitors' offense toward the pins. On the other side, CofO's serve repeatedly created its own pressure, most notably in the fourth frame before JBU reversed the trend in the deciding set.

"What a fun night of volleyball between two evenly matched teams with momentum constantly swinging back and forth," head coach Ken Carver said. "I'm really proud of our players for sticking with the elements of the game plan that were productive for us while also making the adjustments we needed along the way. Our grit and resiliency were called upon once again to come away with a hard-fought, tightly contested five-set win.

"We showed poise when we needed it, and at other times we got out quickly, built leads, stepped on the gas and didn't look back. It took a complete team effort in all phases to earn this one."

College of the Ozarks (7-5, 4-3 SAC) received a team-high 12 kills on .244 hitting from Brinley Watson. Audrey Riley filled the stat sheet with six aces, 19 assists, 11 digs and three block assists, while Anna Brunner spearheaded the Bobcats' work at the net with 10 block assists as CofO amassed 12 total rejections.

Set 1: The opening frame largely followed offensive efficiency. John Brown started on the front foot and held an 8-6 edge after Tucker put away her first swing of the night, but College of the Ozarks answered with five consecutive points to move in front 11-8.

The Bobcats later created their largest separation with another four-point push, turning a 14-11 advantage into an 18-11 cushion behind two JBU attack errors and a pair of CofO blocks. Day helped the Golden Eagles begin cutting into the deficit, contributing three kills during a stretch that pulled John Brown within 19-15.

JBU continued to chip away late and drew within three at 24-21, but Brunner ended the frame with a termination for the 25-21 Bobcat win. College of the Ozarks hit .209 (14-5-43) in the opener compared with .152 (15-8-46) for John Brown, overcoming JBU's one-kill advantage by committing three fewer attacking errors.

Set 2: The efficiency advantage flipped decisively in the second, and so did the result. College of the Ozarks briefly moved ahead 4-3 before Hyke sided out for the Golden Eagles and sparked six consecutive JBU points. Day and Hyke supplied terminations, Addington landed an ace, and another Day kill pushed John Brown ahead 9-4.

After a brief response from the visitors, JBU rattled off four more points to take a 13-5 lead, then answered the next Bobcat point with five more unanswered. Whitten's ace and a Tucker termination were part of the surge as the advantage ballooned to 18-6.

The hosts never let the visitors back into the frame as Montgomery and Underdown supplied late kills before Day closed the 25-15 victory with her fifth termination of the set. The Golden Eagles attacked at .312 (15-5-32), while their serving and defensive pressure helped hold CofO to a match-worst -.031 clip (6-7-32).

Set 3: The third took a completely different shape. JBU raced ahead 5-0 and later 7-1, with Medina serving an ace during the opening burst and Hyke adding consecutive terminations to create the early six-point cushion.

Ozarks responded immediately, however, as the visitors rallied to score six consecutive points, with Riley landing back-to-back aces during the run, to erase the deficit and pull even at 7-7. From there, neither side could separate. The frame eventually featured 12 ties and four lead changes, with the teams exchanging control deep into the twenties.

CofO moved within one point of a 2-1 match lead when Kamryn Link's kill made it 24-23. Montgomery immediately answered with a termination to fight off set point. A Brunner attacking error then handed JBU its own opportunity at 25-24, and Hyke finished the comeback on the next rally, terminating Medina's set to give the Golden Eagles a 26-24 victory.

Set 4: The fourth was nearly as volatile, producing 11 ties and four lead changes before Ozarks used its serve to create the late separation it needed. Neither team led by more than two through a 15-15 deadlock.

The Bobcats finally broke through with three consecutive points to move ahead 18-15, a stretch that included a Godwin service ace. After JBU sided out, Link later landed another ace for a 20-16 advantage.

John Brown refused to disappear as Underdown and Tucker supplied consecutive kills to trim the deficit to two, and another pair of Tucker and Carlson terminations eventually brought the Golden Eagles within 21-20. College of the Ozarks answered the threat by taking four of the final five rallies, with Riley closing the 25-21 frame from behind the service line.

The Bobcats landed five of its 11 aces on the night in the fourth set, using the increased service pressure to send the match to a deciding fifth.

Set 5: John Brown never trailed in the deciding frame. After a CofO service error opened the scoring, the Golden Eagles quickly pushed ahead 2-0 and then answered a Watson kill with five consecutive points.

Tucker and Day supplied kills during the surge before Addington took control from the service line. An attacking error made it 5-1, and Addington followed with consecutive aces to stretch the lead to 7-1 and force a College of the Ozarks timeout.

The Bobcats still had one response left. With JBU holding a 10-4 advantage, CofO won five straight rallies to pull within 10-9, mixing two kills with three Golden Eagle errors and forcing a John Brown timeout.

Hyke stopped the run with a kill, and JBU's serve began applying pressure again. A Riley attack error pushed the margin back to 12-9, and after the teams exchanged side outs, an Ozarks service error moved John Brown within two points of the match.

Medina made sure those were the final two rallies. The junior dropped consecutive aces on CofO's serve receive, completing a 15-10 victory and the five-set win.

JBU landed four aces in the fifth set alone and never allowed the Bobcats to tie the score.

"I feel like all of the tightly contested sets we've played so far have seasoned our group for back-and-forth matches like this," added Carver. "We never really panic. We just do our best to play each point to the best of our ability and then, win or lose, reset and do it all over again.

"This group battles hard regardless of the score and plays with a lot of belief in one another. As long as we keep doing that, we'll continue to put ourselves in position to win."

The Golden Eagles now take their two-match winning streak on the road Friday evening (Sept. 25), visiting Mid-America Christian (Okla.) for a 6 p.m. first serve inside the Gaulke Activity Center. Friday night's match will appear exclusively on the SAC Sports Network, for a fee charged by Mid-America Christian University.
