OKLAHOMA CITY -- The John Brown University volleyball team rode a career-high 18-kill performance from freshman Chelsea Day and another disruptive night from the service line to rally past Mid-America Christian (Okla.) in four sets (22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19) Friday evening (Sept. 25) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.

John Brown (9-7, 5-3 Sooner Athletic) found a different route to its third consecutive victory after Mid-America Christian finished with advantages in hitting percentage (.228-.210), kills (51-49) and blocks (6-3). The Golden Eagles, instead, created separation from behind the service line, landing a season-best 14 aces and enjoyed 15 MACU service errors, while JBU supplemented that pressure with a 73-66 edge in digs.

Day delivered the most productive attacking night of her young career, terminating 18 of 33 swings with only four errors for a .424 hitting percentage. The freshman accounted for nearly 37 percent of John Brown's kills and was especially effective in the clincher, where six of her terminations helped the Golden Eagles close the match.

"Chelsea was outstanding offensively for us tonight," head coach Ken Carver pointed out. "We've seen glimpses throughout the season of how impactful she can be, but this was certainly her biggest performance to this point. Even with several players standing out, though, this was a total team effort. We still have areas we're working hard to improve, but this group is starting to figure some things out — how to win when we're playing well, how to stay the course when things get a little sideways and how to keep fighting for each point so we continue putting ourselves in position to win close sets and matches."

Senior Akayla Kador and freshman Whitley Underdown added efficient production through the middle, each putting away five attacks. Kador hit .364 (5-1-11) and contributed three total blocks, while Underdown attacked at a .300 clip (5-2-10).

The service pressure came from throughout the rotation as sophomore Kate Carlson paced six Golden Eagle servers with four aces, while junior Tessa Medina and sophomore Paige Addington landed three apiece. Freshman Chloe Hooper added two, and senior Mia Bowman and junior Mallory Jury each supplied one as JBU registered five aces in both the second and fourth frames.

Medina and Hooper again shared the bulk of the setting responsibilities, combining for 39 of JBU's 45 assists. Medina handed out a team-high 21 helpers, while Hooper paired 18 assists with 11 digs for a second-consecutive double-double. Addington led the back-row effort with 17 scoops, and Jury added 14 as four Golden Eagles finished with at least 11 digs.

"Tonight was the latest edition of what has become a tightly contested series between our team and MACU, and we played it in the loudest gym we've been in all season," Carver added. "It was an energetic atmosphere with both teams competing hard to earn the win. After another slow start, our team found its footing midway through the first set. We weren't able to finish the comeback in that set, but I thought we began establishing some momentum that carried us through the rest of the night. Our serving made a significant difference, and I was really pleased with the pressure we were able to create from the service line."

Mid-America Christian (7-6, 3-4) received a dominant attacking performance from Seyi Atolagbe, who put away 16 kills without committing an error on 24 swings to hit .667. Marcela Nalin and Madi Trayler each added nine terminations, while libero Gracelyn Skaggs collected a match-high 21 digs for the host Evangels.

Set 1: Mid-America Christian established the stronger offensive rhythm in the opener, turning a 7-6 edge into an 11-6 advantage with four consecutive points before John Brown began working its way back. Day and Hyke helped the Golden Eagles trim the deficit, and a Carlson ace capped a three-point response that brought JBU within 11-9.

The Blue and Gold continued applying pressure and later pulled within a single point at 14-13 behind another Day termination and a Hooper ace, but the Evangels repeatedly found an answer before JBU could draw even. MACU rebuilt the advantage to 18-14 and, after John Brown again closed within 18-17, produced three straight points to restore a 21-17 cushion.

JBU made one final charge behind consecutive Carlson kills and later drew within 22-21 on an Underdown termination, but MACU claimed three of the final four rallies for the 25-22 decision.

The Evangels hit a match-best .316 (14-2-38) in the opener while holding John Brown to .132 (12-7-38).

Set 2: Six early ties kept the second frame unsettled before John Brown finally created sustained separation behind its serving game. After MACU pulled even at 11-11, the Golden Eagles moved back in front and eventually carried a narrow 13-12 advantage into the decisive stretch.

Day started a seven-point JBU surge with consecutive terminations, and Addington eventually took over from behind the service line. The sophomore landed back-to-back aces after a Kador kill and a pair of MACU attack errors had widened the margin, completing a run that transformed the one-point advantage into a commanding 20-12 lead.

The Evangels mounted a late response and cut an eight-point deficit in half, but Tucker sided out for JBU at 23-18 before Underdown provided another termination. MACU briefly extended the frame before Tucker ended it at 25-20, giving the Golden Eagles a set in which they landed five aces and hit .238 (13-3-42).

Set 3: MACU grabbed the first significant advantage of the third frame when a five-point run pushed the hosts ahead 10-4, but JBU began methodically working its way back. Kador helped trigger a four-point response that cut the margin to 10-8, and the Golden Eagles eventually erased it completely when Day's kill put JBU in front 17-16.

From there, the set developed into the tightest frame of the night, producing seven ties and four lead changes. Neither side could gain more than a one-point edge through a 21-21 deadlock before Day terminated another swing to move the Golden Eagles ahead 22-21 and Carlson immediately followed with an ace for the first two-point advantage of the closing stretch.

MACU pulled within 23-22, but a service error handed JBU set point and Hyke finished the frame on the next rally, putting away Medina's set for a 25-22 victory and a 2-1 match advantage.

The Golden Eagles held the Evangels to .105 hitting (10-6-38) in the frame.

Set 4: John Brown scored the first two points of the clincher and never surrendered the advantage. Day found the floor four times among JBU's first seven points, helping the visitors build an early cushion before Jury's ace and Carlson's ensuing termination stretched the margin to 9-5.

The Golden Eagles later pushed ahead 13-7 before MACU answered with four consecutive points to pull within two, but JBU again used its serve to keep the Evangels from completing the comeback. Medina dropped an ace during a three-point response that rebuilt the advantage to 16-11, and after MACU made one final push to 17-16, Day sided out to begin the match's decisive run.

That termination started six unanswered Golden Eagle points as Addington contributed an ace, Medina found the floor herself and Hyke teamed with Kador for a rejection that made it 23-16. MACU prolonged the match for three more rallies, but Day supplied the final word with her sixth kill of the set, completing the 25-19 victory and her career-high 18-kill night.

John Brown hit a match-best .310 (13-4-29) in the fourth and landed five more aces, finishing the evening with 10 service winners across the final three sets.

The Golden Eagles complete its Oklahoma road swing Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26), traveling to Chickasha for a 1 p.m. matchup with Science & Arts (Okla.). The Urban Edge Network and the SAC Sports Network will carry the action live from the Drover Fieldhouse.
