SHREVEPORT, La. -- Junior Tianna Jones scored the eventual game-winner and added an assist as No. 16 John Brown controlled nearly every phase of a 4-0 victory over LSU Shreveport (La.) on Monday afternoon (Sept. 7) at The Swamp.
John Brown (4-1-0) held the Pilots to one shot over 90 minutes, finished with a 15-1 shooting advantage and struck the crossbar three times in addition to putting four goals on the board.
The Golden Eagles established that control well before Jones finally broke through in the 22nd minute.
JBU generated the first five shots of the match and twice came within inches of scoring before the opener. Sophomore Andi Riley rattled the crossbar in the 13th minute, and LSUS goalkeeper Lola Smith turned away attempts from Jones and sophomore Joy Long during the early pressure.
Jones eventually made it count in the 22nd minute, finishing off an assist from Riley for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 JBU advantage.
The chances kept coming as Riley struck the crossbar for a second time in the 31st minute as the Golden Eagles continued to control possession and territory. John Brown ultimately produced 11 first-half shots to just one for the hosts, then doubled its advantage shortly before the break.
Senior Clare Barger scored her third goal of the season in the 42nd minute, with Jones supplying the assist, to send the Blue and Gold into intermission with a 2-0 lead.
That margin still understated the Golden Eagles' first-half pressure. Along with the 11-1 shooting advantage, John Brown earned four corners and put six shots on frame while twice being denied by the crossbar.
The woodwork intervened again early in the second half when junior Holly Lanter hit the crossbar in the 55th minute – John Brown's third such attempt of the afternoon.
But LSU Shreveport could do little to turn the match in the other direction. The Pilots did not record a shot after halftime and never earned a corner kick in the match.
John Brown eventually stretched the lead to three in the 69th minute when junior Katherine Keys scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from junior Bella Mendieta.
Junior Joanna Long closed the scoring at 81:13, converting a senior Summer Holmes assist for her first goal of the season and the Golden Eagles' fourth of the afternoon.
Four different John Brown players accounted for the goals, while four different Golden Eagles recorded assists. Jones led the attack with three shots, two on goal, a goal and an assist.
The visitors finished with eight shots on goal to the Pilots' one and owned a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Smith made four saves for the Pilots while allowing four goals and taking the loss.
At the other end, freshman Ansley Fuchs (4-1-0) needed just one save to record her third clean sheet of the campaign.
With the weekend sweep, the Golden Eagles will now turn its attention to a familiar rival: Oklahoma Wesleyan. JBU welcomes the No. 14 Eagles to Alumni Field on Saturday evening (Sept. 12) for a 7 p.m. match. The top-25 showdown will be carried live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
