SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The John Brown University volleyball team faced a challenging weekend on the road, dropping all four matches in the Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) Shin Dig from Aug. 30-31 inside the Mabee Gymnasium.
In the opening match of the tournament, No. 24 Kansas Wesleyan defeated the Golden Eagles in four sets (28-26, 14-25, 22-25, 22-25). Friday's second contest saw the host Saints triumph over JBU in a 3-1 final (17-25, 27-29, 25-18, 13-25).
Saturday's action featured the Golden Eagles falling in a pair of sweeps, first to No. 25 Ottawa (Kan.) (19-25, 16-25, 17-25) then later in the afternoon at the hands of Rocky Mountain (20-25, 15-25, 11-25).
Despite the winless weekend, there were several bright spots and standout individual performances for the John Brown squad, including senior Savanna Riney leading the team with 36 kills (2.57 per set) throughout the tournament, while senior Taylor Golmen posted a .247 attack efficiency (30-8-89) in the middle. Senior Julie Milligan led the defensive effort with 96 digs (6.86 per set) and junior Erin Mullins continued to dominate the front row, notching 12 total blocks, nine of which came in solo fashion. Mullins ranks 45th in the nation with 1.10 blocks per frame.
The Golden Eagles are now past the tournament portion of its season and will begin Sooner Athletic play with consecutive home games, starting on Friday night (Sept. 6) when John Brown invites Southwestern Christian (Okla.) to Bill George Arena for both teams' league opener. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. JBU will then take on Oklahoma City the following afternoon in a 1 p.m. matinee contest. Both games will air live on the SAC Sports Network.
