OKLAHOMA CITY -- John Brown University women's soccer's sophomore goalkeeper Marely Fonseca was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning (Sept. 29).
Fonseca earns her second-career weekly honor after backstopping the No. 6 Golden Eagles to a 1-1 draw at No. 22 Science & Arts (Okla.) on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27). She is the second Golden Eagle to earn SAC weekly honors this year after sophomore Katherine Keys was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2.
The Costa Rica native made six saves in the first-ever regular season draw with the Drovers in a battle of Top 25 teams to open conference action. Fonseca finished the match sopping six of seven USAO chances on frame and improved her season stats to an .840 save percentage (21-of-25) and a 0.66 goals-against average.
JBU is 3-1-2 with her between the sticks and Fonseca is 15-4-2 all-time in Siloam Springs.
The Blue and Gold open a two-match homestand tomorrow night (Sept. 30) when the Golden Eagles welcome Central Christian to Siloam Springs for a 3:05 p.m. contest. The match will be broadcast on the SAC Sports Network.
