Kosmicki Serves JBU Past Central Christian in Sweep

Sophomore lands five aces during first-set run as Golden Eagles never trail

McPHERSON, Kan. -- Sophomore Taylor Kosmicki landed five service aces during a single first-set service turn Friday evening (Nov. 6), helping the John Brown University volleyball team seize control early and never trail in a straight-set victory over Central Christian (Kan.) (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) inside Jerry E. Alexander Arena.

John Brown (16-13, 12-9 Sooner Athletic) completed the regular-season sweep of the Tigers (0-27, 0-21) behind an 11-5 advantage from the service line and an offense that found its rhythm as the match progressed. After hitting just .053 in the opener, the Golden Eagles attacked at .303 in the second and .294 in the third to finish at .210 (34-12-105), while holding the hosts to .077 (25-17-104).

Kosmicki supplied the match's defining service turn after Central Christian had trimmed an early JBU advantage to 10-7 in the opening frame. The sophomore served eight consecutive points, landing all five of her match-high aces during the run as the Blue and Gold surged ahead 18-7. She also finished with 12 assists and five digs.

Sophomore Kate Carlson led John Brown offensively with nine kills against just one error on 20 swings, hitting .400. Junior Federica Ferrari added six kills on a .286 clip, while sophomore Reese Montgomery terminated five of 11 attacks without an error for a .455 percentage.

Freshman Whitley Underdown made the most of her two-set appearance, putting away three kills on four attacks for a .750 hitting percentage. Sophomore Olivia Tucker added five kills, while sophomore Clara Hyke and freshman Chelsea Day contributed two apiece.

Junior Tessa Medina joined Kosmicki with 12 assists and added five digs and an ace. Junior Mallory Jury landed four service aces while collecting 10 digs, and sophomore Paige Addington paced the back row with a match-high 18 digs. With the 18 scoops, Addington crossed the 1,000-dig mark for her career.

Senior Mia Bowman added seven digs and an ace as JBU finished with a 53-49 advantage defensively.

Central Christian was led by Serenity Hawkins with seven kills on .211 hitting, while Hannah Stewart added six. Lexi Witt handed out 18 assists, Sofia Brockmeyer collected 11 digs and Nattelynn Burns finished with nine digs and two service aces.

Set 1: John Brown established the first advantage immediately, opening the match with three straight points behind kills from Bowman and Hyke before pushing the margin to 6-2 on Jury's first ace of the night.

The Tigers worked back within 9-7, but the Golden Eagles answered with the decisive sequence of the frame. After a Central Christian attacking error restored a three-point cushion, Kosmicki took over from the service line.

Kosmicki landed an ace to make it 11-7, Carlson followed with a kill and the sophomore setter struck for two more aces. Another Tiger attacking error and a Ferrari termination extended the run before Kosmicki delivered consecutive aces to complete an eight-point surge and send JBU in front 18-7.

Central Christian never seriously threatened from there. Ferrari twice supplied sideouts down the stretch, Carlson pushed the Golden Eagles to set point and a Tiger service error ended the opener at 25-17.

JBU managed eight kills while hitting .053 (8-6-38), but six service aces, including five from Kosmicki, helped offset the slow attacking start.

Set 2: The second was the most competitive frame early, producing three ties but no lead changes. Central Christian pulled even at 2-2, 4-4 and 5-5 before John Brown began creating separation.

Ferrari restored the lead, Bowman followed with an ace and a Tiger attacking error helped push the Golden Eagles ahead 9-5. JBU later built a 12-8 cushion before Jury struck for consecutive aces to extend the advantage to six.

The hosts mounted their strongest response of the set, eventually cutting the margin to 17-14 behind back-to-back Burns aces. A Central Christian service error stopped the run, and the sides traded points from there.

Carlson, Montgomery, Day and Tucker all supplied kills over the closing stretch before Tucker terminated the final rally for the 25-19 victory.

The Golden Eagle attack improved dramatically in the frame, producing 13 kills against only three errors on 33 swings for a .303 percentage.

Set 3: John Brown broke a 3-3 tie and quickly took control of the finale. Tucker put the visitors ahead 6-4 before three Central Christian errors and a Ferrari kill fueled a four-point push to 10-4.

Montgomery followed with consecutive kills, and Ferrari struck again as the Golden Eagles stretched the margin to 13-5.

Underdown provided another spark from the middle of the frame, putting away two of her three third-set kills as JBU maintained a comfortable advantage. Jury's fourth ace of the match pushed the margin to 18-10, and the Golden Eagles later reached 20-11.

Carlson delivered consecutive terminations during a late three-point run that moved John Brown to match point at 24-13. Central Christian fought off three opportunities before Montgomery finished the sweep with her fifth kill of the evening.

JBU hit .294 (13-3-34) in the final set while limiting the Tigers to .000 (5-5-32).

John Brown concludes the regular season Saturday afternoon (Nov. 7), traveling to Langston (Okla.) for a 1 p.m. first serve inside C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse. The match will be available on the SAC Sports Network.
