Golden Eagles Break Decades-Old Records, Deliver 21 Top-10 Performances at Spire Carnival

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- John Brown University track and field shattered program records that had stood since the 1980s and produced 21 top-10 performances Friday and Saturday (March 20-21) at the Spire Distance Carnival & Team Challenge inside the Charles Berkel Memorial Stadium.

Freshmen Katalina Chan and Abby Steele delivered the weekend's signature moment in the women's 200 meters, toppling a mark that had stood for 38 years. Chan won in 24.94 seconds, breaking Saundra Clark's 25.84 from the 1986 NCCAA National Championships. Steele wasn't far behind, running 25.68 for sixth place to claim the second-fastest time in program history.

The men's 100-meter relay provided another piece of history. Freshman Emerick Wilson, sophomore Noah Osterloh, sophomore Liam Van Der Horn and sophomore Benjamin Coker ran 44.48 to finish seventh, eclipsing the 44.62 clocking from the 1988 NCCAA National Championships.

Chan dominated the sprints all weekend. She broke the 100-meter program record with a second-place finish in 12.01 seconds. Steele ran 12.48 for ninth, rewriting the top two times in program history.

"This meet was incredibly successful for our program," head coach Peter Cunningham said. "Sam Burkett delivered an outstanding performance in the 1,500 meters, and Abigail Stucker did the same on the women's side. Our 4x400-meter relay delivered a standout performance, continuing to raise the bar for the program. Noah Osterloh also made a significant improvement in the triple jump.

"Katalina and Abby led the way in the sprints with dominant performances. A long-standing women's 200-meter record fell, and the men's 400-meter relay also surpassed a long-held program mark."

The women's 1,600-meter relay capped a strong day for the Golden Eagles. Junior Emma Morton, freshman Abigail Stucker, sophomore Clare Barger and Chan ran 4:03.38 to finish third and set another program record.

Morton turned in two more top-10 performances individually. She ran 1:00.71 for sixth in the 400 meters before finishing ninth in the 800 at 2:21.60. Three Golden Eagles competed in the 800 meters, with freshman Edith Bell running 2:22.33 for the 10th-fastest time in program history. Junior Esther Norwood also competed.

Stucker continued her strong outdoor season in the 1,500 meters, running 4:45.64 for fifth place and the fifth-fastest time in program history. Five other Golden Eagles competed in the event. Barger also ran in the 400 meters.

Senior Nikki Basye showed her versatility across three events. She finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles, then jumped 9.68 meters (31 feet, 9.25 inches) and 9.11 meters (29 feet, 10.75 inches) in the triple jump for the second- and eighth-best marks in program history. Basye capped her day with a throw of 29.43 meters (96 feet, 6.75 inches) in the javelin, second-best all-time.

Senior Naia Shepherd ran 14:34.63 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, ninth-fastest in program history.

Freshman Nadia Clark put together a remarkable weekend in the throws. She took second in the shot put at 11.95 meters (39 feet, 2.5 inches). Then came the hammer, where Clark delivered one of the meet's most impressive sequences. Three of her four throws landed in the program's all-time top 10: 34.84 meters (114 feet, 4 inches), 34.73 meters (113 feet, 11 inches) and 33.76 meters (110 feet, 9 inches). She added a 33.20-meter throw (108 feet, 11 inches) in the discus for the 10th-best mark in program history.

Sophomore Sam Burkett led the men's distance crew with a 4:00.59 in the 1,500 meters, second-fastest in program history. Five Golden Eagles competed in the 800 meters, with senior Matthew Cook and junior Henry Zedler pacing the group.

Freshman Payton Brack took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running 9:33.70 for the seventh-fastest time in program history. Junior Chase Schermer finished fourth.

Osterloh set a program record in the triple jump with a leap of 14.16 meters (46 feet, 5.5 inches) to finish second. Sophomore Chase Stone competed in the long jump.

"We're especially excited about the overall momentum of the team," Cunningham added. "Over the course of two days, our athletes recorded 22 PRs and five program records. After a record-breaking weekend, we thank those who set the high standard we continue to chase."

The Blue and Gold return to action after a week off on Saturday (April 4), when the Golden Eagles travel to Pittsburg, Kan. to compete at the Pittsburg State (Kan.) Suenram Gorilla Classic inside Carnie Smith Stadium.
