SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- After two consecutive halves without a goal, the Golden Eagle offense erupted for a trio of strikes in a lopsided contest that saw the No. 7 John Brown University women's soccer team deliver a 3-0 win over Evangel (Mo.) on Monday night (Aug. 24) at Coryell Field.
A rebound header from junior Tianna Jones in the 51st minute stood as the game winner, while sophomore Kayah Robbins booted in her first career goal in the Blue and Gold (1-1-0) late in the contest.
The Valor (1-1-0) were limited to just two shot attempts – both on goal – and recorded an own goal that doubled the visitors' lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute of play.
The win was the first for head coach Nathan Lowery, who was named the fourth Golden Eagle bench boss in program history back in March.
After the visitors carried a 12-0 shooting advantage, but a level scoreline, into halftime, John Brown scored quickly in the second half to take the lead.
Senior Brooklyn Hendricks' free kick from outside the box wasn't handled by EU keeper Paige Estes, allowing Jones' to flick a header across the goal line to place the visitors on the front foot, 1-0, early in the second half.
Just six minutes later, sophomore Joy Long's corner kick caromed off a Valor defender in the box to double the Golden Eagle advantage.
With just over 10 minutes left in the match, Robbins began the final scoring play with a throw in to senior Clare Barger on the right flank. Barger played the throw back to Robbins, who ripped a high, arcing ball towards goal that sailed over Estes and just under the crossbar, ballooning the JBU advantage to three.
The Golden Eagles finished the match out-shooting the hosts, 26-2, including a 14-2 advantage in shot on target. Freshman Ansley Fuchs collected her first-career victory and clean sheet, finishing with a pair of saves in the win.
Before taking off for Labor Day weekend, John Brown welcomes Mission (Mo.) to Alumni Field on Friday night (Aug. 28) for First Friday Fútbol festivities. The 5 p.m. contest will be carried live on both the Urban Edge Network and the SAC Sports Network.
